Nice to see the City can find ways to throw more chaos at us than usual, though I am glad that certain people were able to show up for a time.

Before you ask, Ianto, yes I am cleaning guns on the dinning room table. To everyone else, I've put down drop clothes so there won't be any gun oil or plasma fluid leaked out on the table.

Jake wandered down from the city, toward the beach. It was the first time he'd been down that way and part of him was excited to see the new area. Mostly, though, he was nervous, especially over what had happened yesterday.

He spotted the lighthouse first, then, looking around, saw the beach house. He stopped, took a deep breath, and made his way to the house.

Jake would find the doors to the main house open were he to try them. Jack had set himself up at the top level dinning room table where he could clean guns, watch the waves and also be available for when the other man arrived.

Jake came up to the doors, in that way most people do when in a new place, cautious but interested. And still nervous. He knocked on the door, but didn't wait a minute afterward and just opened it.

"Hello?"

Jack heard Jake's voice and called out.

"Up here!"

Okay, he could probably have been more descriptive about that but when you live somewhere you tend to think people just know their way around automatically.

Hopefully Jake could follow his voice?

Luckily Jake's good at figuring things out, otherwise he wouldn't be working for Torchwood. It took a minute or two, but he found his way upstairs.

"Morning, sir."

He doesn't quite look Jack in the eyes.

The barrel chamber of a revolver in his hand, Jack stood up and turned towards Jake, smiling as he held out his hand.

"Good morning, Jake and please, call me Jack. Took me two years to get Ianto out of the habit of calling me, 'sir'."

He noticed the not looking in the eyes, which bemused Jack a little bit but he put it down to first time meeting jitters.

"Now, what horrible lies has Mickey been telling you about me?" He asked in a light voice, meant to show that he was joking and didn't really believe Mickey would tell horrible lies.

Horrible truths however...

"Right. Sorry, it's habit."

He smiled quickly, but it wasn't a real smile, just a reaction to Jack's question.

"He said you're a flirt and that you've got a lot of self esteem, and I have to agree with him, after last night."

But he couldn't help being honest.

"Last night?" Jack asked curiously and since Jake didn't seem inclined to shake hands, he gently indicated that the other man should take a seat, before lowering his arm and returning to his own chair.

He sat, eying the guns on the table. He put both hands on the table, inches away from the closest one.

"Yeah. I have to say your interview methods aren't like any one elses." He said this quite matter of factly, though he still wouldn't look up.

"You've got quite a collection here." Jake nodded toward the table.

Now Jack just looked confused.

"I'm sorry but what are you talking about?"

Jake finally looked up, looking defensive and just a little worried.

"We talked last night, right?"

And it might have been a little more than talking.

Jack arched an eyebrow and then slowly shook his head.

"No, we didn't. I was in the Underground all day and then came home and went out to dinner with Ianto."

"Oh." He wasn't blushing exactly, but almost. "Oh. You know, I should be smarter than that. And you..." He was definitely blushing now. "You wouldn't act like that with a potential employee."

Jack still wasn't making the connection but Jake obviously seemed to have come to some conclusion that worked for him so Jack figured that had to be a good thing, right?

Well, there had been Ianto so, that last bit wasn't technically true but no need to open a can of worms.

"Right then!" Jack agreed. "So, we're meeting and interviewing now. Mickey recommends you highly, you know. I guess you and he worked together a lot?"

He wasn't completely relaxed, but he felt a little better because Jack wasn't pressing. He did not want to bring up anything related

"Yeah, we do. Did." Jake grinned. "We make a pretty good team."

Jack would be incredibly confused if he did.

"That's the impression I got," Jack said, reaching for a cleaning stick and wrapping a bit of soft cloth around it so he could oil the chambers of the revolver barrel he held.

"Well, things are a lot more laid back here in the City than at 'home'. The deities seem to have a pretty good control mechanism over this bit of reality, within reason, so mostly we're investigating the monsters down in the Underground. It's purely a catch and release program, we grab a critter or two, being them here for study and then let them go once we're done."
