[Have a video of Winry in what looks to be a chef's kitchen. Part of the workspace is currently being used by Winry to build pies. Three empty pie shells are on the counter, as well as various fruits. A ball of raw dough is also on the counter, surrounded by flour. There are some pint boxes of fruit, ready to be prepared for the pies. A couple ( Read more... )

[And Naoto is sitting in the kitchen quietly observing. It's how she learns best, after all.]

I take it you're not working from a recipe, are you?

[Little smile.] No, I've made enough fruit pies, I can just sort of throw those together. The peach pie needs a little syrup, though, so I'll have to add some sugar water to it.

[A nervous laugh.] I'm not confident enough in my cooking skills to try and experiment with the recipe. Baking is a lot like chemistry: if you follow the formula exactly, you'll end up with the same result every time.

[Takes a little flour in her fingers and flicks it at Naoto] If you don't experiment, you don't learn!

[Catches it in the face and blinks, covering her mouth with one hand as she sneezes.]

I prefer experimenting in the laboratory, not the kitchen. I've never been terribly domestic. You should have seen my flat when I first moved in... You'd have thought a family of pack rats lived there...

Ed likes to say all alchemy began in the kitchen. So you could think of what I'm doing as lab work, just in a different kind of lab. [Is amused at Naoto sneezing.]

And Ed's a terrible cook. [Of course, one could say the same thing of chemistry...] Well, if this is a lab setting, then we both need to be properly dressed, don't we?

[So without further ado, Naoto is going to tie on a rather utilitarian white apron with an orange cartoon kitty face stitched on the front. Kanji's handiwork, of course. Naoto would never be caught dead in a pink frilly apron.]

So, where do we begin?

[Grins] You could peel and cut up the peaches.

Well, I'm pretty handy with a knife...

[Luckily, the kitchen is equipped with all the sate of the art gadgets and cutlery. One of the advantages to being so well-off: you can afford the best tools for the hired help. So Naoto is going to wash the peaches off in the sink before peeling the skin from them.]

Are they all going to be peach pies? Or are you making some different ones?

The apple one is ready to go into the oven; the peach one is next, and then I've got one more to do. I thought a berry pie. [Nods at a couple of pint boxes of berries.]

Mm! [Still peeling.] It must seem awfully convenient to be able to get fresh fruit, even during winter. We have supermarkets that keep fruit stocked all year round.

What's your favorite kind of pie, Winry?

We put up a lot of fruit and vegetables at home, but the trains do bring fresh product in. They just cost a lot more. Rezembool doesn't usually get those things, but I know Central and East City do.

But these fruits are amazing. [Winry pops a berry in her mouth and smiles as she chews.]

Some of the farmers still do canning and preserves, but it's not something I've ever done. I suppose most people don't see a need for it these days. [Although peach preserves are really tasty!]

I prefer to purchase from the local markets, if I can. You have to pay a little more, but I've always tried to support small businesses. Besides, I personally think the fruit they sell tastes better than the stuff at Junes. [Oh, if Yosuke heard her say that, he'd be crushed...]

It's not really that hard to do and it tastes very different from house to house - each family has its own recipes, you know? Granny has recipes from her great grandparents that we use when we make pickles and hot sauce.

Most of my family's recipes have to do with hangover remedies... [A bit of laughter. Well, just goes to show that she's not the only one who's had a bit of a drinking problem...] The majority of the cooking has always been provided for by the household staff, but there were a few occasions where my mother would insist on cooking. Like my birthday. She'd make me breakfast in bed: pancakes and eggs with bacon. And later on, she'd make a small cake just for us to share.

[Okay, the peaches are now peeled! Time to pit them.]

Granny has some of those, too. But she likes cooking, and she started teaching me how to make simple meals when I was pretty young. I had to help get ingredients ready, too.

[Starts rinsing the berries in a colander.]

Oh, did you have a recipe for that cake you wanted me to make? I'd like to try to bake one before the party, just to make sure I can make it right.
