Today was France day. We visited Colmar which is a small town in France, close to the German boarder. It was very French though including pastry, crepe, and pretzal shops. It had an H and M which was disappointing but the other shops were really neat. We went to the Musee de Underlinden which is an old monastery known for its large stone altar. It was absolutely amazing. The religious paintings were neat and we were very lucky to see a Picasso exhibit that was there temporarily. We tried to walk to the Route de Vin but unfortunately, it was a lot farther than we anticipated. Rather, we walked back to the grocery, Monopix, to buy wine made in the Alsace and cheese of course. There is a kind of wine i bought i have never heard of before so i am going to bring it back with me. The French architecture was neat but not as cool as Germany. The streets and the cars are so small, i love it.
Perhaps the most unexpected but very fun part of the day was our layover in Breisach (a small German town). We had to stop there to switch from the train to the bus, unfortunately, the trains have very strange schedules and only come every four hours, so we had three hours to wait for it. We walked around the town which was very neat. THere was an old Catholic church on top of hill. We walked up to it and from there you could see the Rhine and across from the Rhine was France. You could also see the grapes growing in the hills and the rooftops of the entire town. Amazing. I took some photos. There was also a best western near the church, a statue that was neat, and a lot of history in the entire town. I loved it.
I am learning some German and am bound and determined to come back able to get by in Germany if i needed to someday. We also discovered we know thank you in ten different languages including Norweigen, Swedish, and Denmark. I met a girl from Norway today, Carolyns friend, who spoke amazing English, as well as German and Norweign. She had a great accent too.
Ok off to bed. Tomorrow we conquer Freiburg and drink the best beer in Germany!
Things learned today:
the french dont like to speak English and often times act like they dont know how
Germans love to garden
Dominos and Claires both are in France
McDonalds has a one euro menu
H and M in France is more expensive than the states
Carolyn has a straight ticket to hell by making fun of Jesus (or as she says it was just about the paintings)
red wine and coke mixed is very good
While eating a turkish restaurant in Germany on our way to France, John Mellencamps "Born in the USA" sang in English came on the radio. . .really have no idea what we learned here except for the concept of irony
The French towns close down by 19:00.
The German shops close for one to two hours for lunch
