"One's actions, not one's words, define who you are" Pope John Paul, II
I found myself watching a program on Pope John Paul this evening - I couldn't draw myself away from it, and during the program, this quote that he had said before was repeated again, and it kind of hit me hard and made me think about what this statement means to me. Here is this man who knew who he was in life, what his impact would be on the world and spoke through his actions of love, hope and peace. Too often, I feel people get caught up in the words, the promises they make during their lives and not on the actions that they take. Actions do, indeed, speak louder than words. They speak volumes.
This is kind of a motto I have in life. I've been in relationships before where promises are made and rarely ever kept or followed through, and I've been known to say "show me, don't tell me." But really, isn't that what truly matters, not just in relationships but in general? It's not what you say but what you do. Your passions, your dreams, your loves in life - it's all about how you act them out that make you a whole person. And believe me, I've been known to utter the words but not act on them so so many times before. But your words, and not just your words - but the small things in life - your possessions, what you own, your "title" in a job, the car you drive, that doesn't make you a whole and complete person. That doesn't make you real or genuine. It doesn't make you who you are. It's what you do - what you dedicate your life to - whether it be your faith, your family, your pursuit of an impossible dream - that's what makes you YOU.
This man was loved by people all over for his actions of peace, forgiveness and love. He truly spoke through what he did. And the more I read that quote, the more beautiful and how true it really seems.
Alaina posted this in her journal a few days ago and I found it every enlightening so I thought I'd stick it on here as well.
