He gets punched in the arm.

...Okay, not very hard.

Karla's hair is a little longer--down to her shoulders--and seems to have only the most passing acquaintance with a brush. Otherwise, she looks pretty much the same.

Preston turns around.

His grin was already pretty firmly in place, from various other meetings - but it gets just a little brighter now.

"Hey, Karla."

. . . all right, now he is feeling slightly self-conscious about the beard.

"Hey, yourself," Karla says, tone a little grouchy even if there's a smile tugging at the corner of her mouth.

She holds out her arms and steps forward a little, in a pretty clear offer of a hug.

Preston hugs her tightly - he tries not to make it too tight - and then steps back, quickly.

"I can't be in too much disgrace," he informs her. "I didn't sneak off, right? Squared it away first and all. Also, came back with no injuries. That covers most of it, right?"

"Except for the part where I've been up on stage on my own every night," Karla says, making a face. Not that it's that much different from being one of two people on stage. "No injuries is good though, because if there were I might have to kick your ass a little, depending on how serious they were."

"Yeah, you know, I ran into another pack of unfriendly wolves and they were kinda gonna beat me up, and then I was like, 'guys, if you do that and Karla finds out, I don't even know, it's not gonna be good for any of us,' and they were like 'shit, good point.' Which was decent of them, I thought."

"Damn straight. I know kung-fu."

No, she's still not tired of saying that.

"--There weren't actual unfriendly werewolf packs, were there?" she adds, brow furrowing a little.

"Nah. Nothing so exciting."

One brief encounter with a pack that was a little too friendly about acquiring new members, but Preston's not going into that.

"Did find an old camping site, though. Actually, hold on a sec -"

He rummages in a slightly tattered pocket, and, after a few moments, pulls out a . . . fish-shaped keychain. With 'Des Plains Fish and Wildlife Area' written on it.

"I kind of figured I should bribe you out of wrath with something, but they didn't have too much in the way of souvenirs," he explains, a little sheepishly.

Karla grins crookedly, more at Preston then at...having a fish-shaped keychain from wherever the heck Des Plains is.

"Man, I would totally use this if I had any keys," she says, taking it and slipping it into a pocket. She glances back up at Preston, and adds, "No homecoming gift, but I've been keeping an eye on your bass."

"Thanks," Preston says seriously. "Stops her from pining, you know -"

He stops, as he comes to a sudden realization, and pushes the palm of his hand up his forehead.

". . . shit, she's gotta be hell out of tune with all this rain. How's your guitar been dealing with it?"

Karla shrugs. "Not too bad. Little trickier than normal to keep it in tune, but I'm dealing. 'Course, I haven't been neglecting it."

Karla is not above guilt-tripping Preston a little.

"You know I couldn't bring her with me," Preston protests. "I draw the line at serenading to the birds, man."
