Club Opening

Well.

Here we go.

The night is young, the lights are low, and the sound system actually appears to be working. Gwen's dressed in what, for her, is nice: black dance pants, ballet flats, and a scoop-neck t-shirt.

She's just praying no fights break out. She likes this shirt ( Read more... )

And there's Preston, with his bass-onna-cart - craning his neck and looking around real hopefully for someone who can play, say, a melody.

After a minute, he shrugs, and kneels down to unpadlock the case.

"Looking for someone?"

And there's a Karla over his shoulder, smiling just a bit.

Preston looks up.

Preston says: :D!!!

"Making a grand entrance?"

Solemnly, "I try."

She bends to open her own case, still smiling.

"So, I've never played, like, on an actual stage. Should be interesting."

"Hey, I'm an old hand at this," Preston tells her, solemnly.

"I've played on about every stage in Monterey.

"Uh, all the ones that are really garages, at least."

"Hey, one man's garage is another man's...stage. I guess."

Karla ducks her head through the shoulder strap, then straightens up.

"So, got any particular tunes in mind?"

Preston snorts.

"Shit, up 'til five minutes ago, I was prepping 'Stairway to Heaven' on bass. Pick what you like; I'll follow up."

You know what happens when you let Karla pick the music?

That's right.

Hey, it's catchy.

It's got a beat and you can dance to it!

Or. You know. Cry to it.

Preston strikes up the bass line, though he doesn't hide a smirk at the repeat selection.

". . . remind me to scrounge some amps," he says, at the end of it - looking around at the roomful of people, a little ruefully.

"Didn't sound too bad from here," Karla comments. "But amps at all are new and fun for me, so."

A grin. "Sure, it sounds fucking great from here."

Preston squints out at all the people in the room - more for effect, than anything else; he can smell who's where, even over the (still unpleasantly acrid) scent of fresh paint.

"Way out in the corner there, though - ten bucks says they couldn't even tell we were playing."

Hey, it's not like ten bucks means much anymore anyways.

If Karla had ten bucks, she certainly wouldn't be betting with it.

Flippantly, "Their loss."

Then, more serious, "You think you'd be able to get more amps from somewhere?"

"I dunno," Preston says, thoughtfully.

"There's a techie here says he's supposed to be handling sound - and I met a guy yesterday, too, does black market sort of shit. But if I asked him the price'd probably be steep."

"Yeah, probably."

Karla's strumming idly, playing little snatches of notes that aren't really a song, per se.

Then, she starts into something else, which would sound a lot better with a full band, but it's worth a shot.

"Know this one?"

"- hang on, give me a sec," Preston says, frowning a moment; then his face clears, and he strikes a few triumphant cords.

"Jethro Tull."

"Yep." Karla grins, strumming. "Keep me around long enough, and I'll play something by someone who doesn't start with J, promise."
