Well.

Here we go.

The night is young, the lights are low, and the sound system actually appears to be working. Gwen's dressed in what, for her, is nice: black dance pants, ballet flats, and a scoop-neck t-shirt.

She's just praying no fights break out. She likes this shirt

Vanessa thinks that opening night probably isn't the best time to apply for a job, but then again, maybe they're desperate. She didn't get much information earlier.

She walks in and pretends not to feel lost.

Brightens. Is that Les?

Oh, but he's talking to somebody.

[lesper]

Not anymore!

Les smiles and calls, "Vanessa. Hi!"

A friendly voice! Someone who knows her name! Vanessa feels much better as she walks over.

"Didn't think I'd run into you so soon. Can't say I'm sorry!"

[lesper]

"It's good to see you."

He looks at her. "You found the shelter okay last night?"

[bigdamnboots]

She nods. "Yeah, all it took was a little walking. I don't have anywhere permanent yet, but the shelter people are all right."

Vanessa doesn't realize that people are usually nice to little girls who are lost.

[lesper]

Silly Vanessa.

"That's good."

This news pleases el Les.

Vanessa glances around. The walls are cheerful, if kinda mismatching. A place to hang out. Hopefully a place to work. All in all, the first good thing that's happened in a while.

"So, how've you been?"

Well, second.

[lesper]

"Ummm. Fine."

Les is always fine.

He waves a hand. "I was helping set up yesterday, so it's nice to see that nothing exploded or anything."

Exciting new development!

"Hey, do you work here? I was thinking of being a waitress. I used to. Before."

[lesper]

"Kind of. I guess. I mean, I don't know if there's much more for me to do. I was in charge of. Lights and things."

[bigdamnboots]

"Well, lights short out sometimes, right? You should stick around."

[lesper]

"Sure. I like Gwen, so. I'd stay anyway."

[bigdamnboots]

Well, there's one way to find out who this "Gwen" is.

"She own the place?"

[lesper]

"Yes. It was her idea."

[bigdamnboots]

Perfect! She doesn't really want a mean boss.

"What's she look like? I'm gonna have to find her to ask her to hire me."

[lesper]

"Ummm. She's about . . . this tall."

Les holds out a hand: shorter than him. Not that tall.

"Thin. Long hair."
