Maybe rubbing salt into a wound is necessary for understanding the reasons for avoiding it. Or having to try green olives multiple times to decide if the pungent taste is a good one or a bad one. Maybe it’s like throwing up for a week straight before being able to simply appreciate how you felt before you came down with something, and how much more you’ll appreciate it after it passes. Especially the first day you’re able to keep an ice pop and a bagel down. It takes getting fired from a bunch of shitty jobs to realize that the first job you quit wasn’t even really that bad, or a bunch of shitty relationships before the ex you hated returns as a fond memory. I think that’s what learning and experience means. I’m 24 and I’m still working on it.
