“Mummy!” Hermione looked up from her book as her daughter ran into the room. Adara sobbed as she crashed into her mother and grabbed her legs.
“What’s wrong, Adara?” Hermione asked, lifting a hand to stroke her daughter’s hair.
“Oh it’s awful, Mummy.” Adara looked up. Hermione could see that her daughter’s front two teeth were missing. “They fell out!” Adara shrieked. “I wasn’t doing anything to them, but they just both fell out!” Before Hermione could say anything to reassure her child, the other inhabitant of the room spoke up.
“So why are you bothering your mother about that?” drawled Draco as he set his paper aside. “If I’m not mistaken she has warned you on numerous occasions that all the sugar you consume would lead to your teeth rotting out.” He looked languidly at his daughter, who was still holding on to Hermione for dear life. “Frankly, my dear, I will not be surprised if all your teeth fall out within the year. Particularly with the way you always neglect to brush them.”
Adara wailed and ran from the room before her mother could contradict her father. Hermione whipped her head around to skewer her husband with a glare. “And just what do you think you’re doing, Draco Malfoy?” she demanded. “How dare you scare her like that! You know that she’s at that age when she’s going to lose her baby teeth.”
“Darling,” he said arrogantly, “you have often called me to task for not supporting your efforts at impressing upon our children the importance of oral hygiene. Just think. With just one comment, I have accomplished what none of your lengthy lectures have. I am certain that Adara will never forget to brush her teeth again.” He smirked as the sound of a nearby sink turning on full blast reached them.
