[IC Information]
Character Name: Robin Nico
Series: One Piece
Gender: Female
Age: 28
Species: Human
Appearance: Robin is 6'2", very slender, with large breasts, curvy hips, and long legs. In other words, she has the kind of body any straight man would drool over. She has black, shoulder-length black hair and dark brown eyes. She generally wears skimpy clothing that shows a lot of cleavage and a lot of skin, and she is rather fond of leather. She also wears a lot of black and purple. She occasionally dons a cowboy hat. High heels and long boots are her typical footwear.
Personality: Robin is a complex and enigmatic woman who does not trust easily. Generally, she is very polite and cheerful, and is often seen smiling. Before meeting her nakama, this was equal parts irony and act on her part; ironic that she could smile so sweetly after killing someone in cold blood, an act in that it was merely to shield the tortured and despairing soul beneath. Her tendency to laugh in bad situations is also a holdover from what Saul taught her when she was eight, to laugh when things are bad and one day things will be better.
Robin also has a tendency to be dark and morbid. For example, if those rocks that just fell could have killed you, she will happily inform you of that. She also likes to give things gothic names, such as "Being of Darkness" or some such.
Robin is extremely intelligent and secretive, and she enjoys knowing things. Generally, once she knows a secret, she will keep it to herself unless absolutely necessary that she reveal it. But she generally keeps her knowledge to herself, and it COULD be that she gains amusement from hinting that she knows more than she is saying.
In front of her nakama, Robin is somewhat different from the polite and professional woman she is in front of others. She is much quicker to laugh and smile, finding great joy and amusement from her crewmates. She is also willing to act silly, once agreeing to a contest to see who could put the most meat in their mouth. She DOES have a limit to what embarrassing acts she will take part in, however, as the boys found out the disappointing way at Thriller Bark.
Surprisingly, she also has a great love of cute things. However, her definition of "cute" isn't always the same as the general population...
History: Robin was born the daughter of two historians. Her father died while she was still an infant, and when she was two, her mother, Olvia, left to fulfill his dream and study the True History, an act that was strictly forbidden by the World Government. For the next six years, Robin lived with her aunt, a horrible woman who cared nothing about her and made sure she knew that she was unwanted in the household. During this time, Robin consumed a Devil's Fruit, the Hana Hana no Mi, which freaked out the other children on her island, Ohara, and caused them to abuse and bully her.
Robin's only form of relief from her miserable life came when she went one day into the Tree of Knowledge, the largest research library in the world. Proving to be extremely intelligent and inquisitive, she was quickly befriended by the scholars living in the Tree, especially their head, Professor Clover. The scholars took her in and taught her everything they could about history and archaeology, until she took a test and became a full-fledged archaeologist.
When asked what she wanted to study, Robin announced that she wanted to learn the True History. She was expressly forbidden to do so, because the scholars feared for her life.
Upset, Robin fled across the island, where she came across a giant who had washed ashore, named Saul. The two quickly became friends, and Robin visited him and brought him lunch while he built a raft to leave the island. After four days, Saul asked what island he was on, and Robin informed him that it was Ohara. Saul, shocked, told her that battleships were on the way to destroy the island, especially the Tree of Knowledge, in order to wipe any trace of the True History from the earth.
Meanwhile, who should have landed on the island but Nico Olvia herself? She was rushing to warn the archaeologists of the danger, and happened to run right past her daughter. Both had been dying to see each other for six yeas. Neither recognized the other.
Robin returned to the Tree of Knowledge, knowing that her mother had returned to the island from Saul. Clover denied that her mother was on the island, as Olvia wanted, because she feared that if her daughter were associated with a criminal, she would be persecuted and destroyed. Clover told Robin to flee the island while she had the chance, and not to mention that she was an archaeologist, so that she wouldn't be caught. Robin refused to leave them, however, and soon the CP9, a team of elite government agents, arrived, cutting off all chance for escape.
Olvia confronted the leader of CP9 and was gravely injured. She was brought to the Tree of Knowledge to join the other researchers in their death sentence. She recognized her daughter, and was recognized as well, but refused to acknowledge Robin because of her fear for her daughter's wellbeing. After a fierce standoff between Professor Clover and CP9, the battleships began the deadly Buster Call, an assault guaranteed to destroy an entire island, and the government agents took their leave.
It was then that Olvia and Robin finally reunited... only to be torn apart for good as the cannons laid waste to the island of Ohara.
Robin begged to stay with her mother, as it had been her dream to walk with her and hold her hand, but Olvia told her to keep her will to live and to run. She would stay behind because she still had some things to do.
Saul came then and took Robin away. They escaped to the seaside, where they were confronted by a Marine Admiral, one of the strongest men in the world. He stopped Saul, freezing him with his ice powers. His last words to Robin were to go out to sea, for her friends were waiting for her there. He laughed, as he said to do in hard times, and then he was gone.
The Admiral agreed to let Robin go, as a favor to Saul, who had been in the Marines before and had been one of his good friends. He provided a small boat for the girl, which she paddled away as her home burned to the ground behind her. She tried to laugh like Saul, but was too overcome with tears.
For the next twenty years, Robin would run for her life, branded as a wanted criminal. She would be betrayed, and in return would betray others, always too close to death for comfort. She continued her dream of finding the Rio Poneglyph and the True History, like her parents, but the dream began to die the longer she spent on the run.
When she was twenty-four, she ran into a man named Crocodile, who invited her into his organization because he learned she could read the Poneglyphs. She agreed, and helped him in his scheme to take over the kingdom of Alabasta, in order to read the Poneglyph hidden there and build the ancient weapon, Pluton. This plot is ultimately foiled by Luffy and his crew, but not before the Poneglyph is found. Robin reveals that she never intended to tell Crocodile how to build Pluton, and he stabbed her. Luffy then fought and defeated Crocodile.
As the cave they were in crashed down around them, Robin told Luffy that there was nothing left for her and that she wished to die. Luffy, of course, would not have this, and he saved her. She later showed up on their ship, the Going Merry, and demanded she be allowed into the crew, because Luffy was responsible for the life she no longer wanted. Against his crewmates' protests, Luffy agrees.
After traveling with her new crew for awhile, Robin grew to love them more than anyone, so that, when faced with a choice, she chose to go with the government and help them build a weapon that could destroy the entire world, so long as those six went free. Her new nakama refused for her to go with CP9, however, because she would ultimately be imprisoned or killed, and went to great lengths to save her. When she saw what they were willing to do for her, she declared her will to live and asked them to save her.
Which they did.
Robin would continue on happily with the Straw Hats until they arrived at the Sheboady Archipelago. It was there that the Straw Hat Pirates suffered their greatest defeat. After watching her other nakama get vanished away by the powerful and mysterious Bartholomew Kuma, she herself suffered the same fate, screaming her captain's name.
She wakes up in a world very different from her own...
Supernatural Abilities: When she was a very young girl, Robin ate the Hana Hana no Mi: the Blossom Blossom Fruit. This Devil's Fruit gave her an amazing ability, at the cost ever swimming again. The ability: she can sprout hands, feet, ears, and eyes from any surface. It's very impressive.
In her world, the number of arms and feet seems to be unlimited (though she can usually only blossom one eye or ear at a time). Her range is also extremely large. But in Chicago, she is finding that sprouting more than her usual twenty arms or so, or keeping them physical for longer than a few minutes, takes a lot of energy, and she can't sprout them from nearly as far away as she could before. She still cannot swim, salt water or not. Also, if her extra limbs are destroyed, the pain inflicted on her true body is much worse than it was in her own universe.
Natural Abilities: Robin is extremely intelligent, and is physically fit due to her, ah, ACTIVE lifestyle. Overall, however, she has the strength and speed of an average human female.
Possessions: Like her crewmates, Robin had nothing on her but her clothing and her Vivrecard when she came. The Vivrecard is a small piece of paper that is extremely important to her, so important that attempting to take it will probably get you killed, even if it doesn't do anything in this world.
First-Person POV journal sample:
[Note left for the other Straw Hats:]
Nakama,
I've gone to the library. It's only a few blocks away, so the chances of my being attacked, mauled, devoured, or otherwise injured on the trip over are minimal, though still there, so there's no real need to worry. I know wandering away by myself is not the safest course of action, however I am very interested in reading about the ancient civilizations of this world and want to get some reading done on them. Particularly those of the continent known as South America; such an intriguing history of cannibalism and human sacrifice!
If I have not returned by midnight, it would be best to assume I have died. I hope to see you for dinner.
-Robin
Third-Person POV rp sample:
Robin looked out the window of the hotel room. Her eyes slowly roved over the city, seeing only varying shades of gray. She couldn't see the azure of the sea anywhere.
Finally, with a sigh, she turned back to the interior of the room.
She didn't know how these people lived. It was was... land-locked. She couldn't see the ocean, couldn't hear it, couldn't smell the salt in the air as a storm rolled into the coast.
To Robin, the sea was the very incarnation of freedom. On land was where people tried to betray you, capture you, kill you. The sea was where she had found her nakama. The sea was where she had found her freedom. On land she felt like she was trapped and could never leave.
She hoped it wouldn't be like this forever.
She walked over and joined her friends at the table, grabbing her coffee and lifting it daintily to her lips. After taking a few sips, she lowered it again and sighed.
"This is so strange. I've never not been able to... feel the sea. It's... not natural."
