New thread because...yeah XD

"Don't suppose you can do both, huh?" Tetsu notes idly, knowing personally how hard it is to maintain a full time job and attend school at the same time. He himself can't do it, and all he does is tend bar--he doesn’t have nearly the same amount of responsibility as a manager.

"Still, even if you only found someone to help you out some you might be okay. School's demanding but you'd be surprised what you can study while at work." He almost mentions how he used to watch Rangiku during the weekends and try and name that major bones in the body, the muscle groups, the systems--if he could remember all that while looking at her, possibly the most distracting woman in the world, then remembering it in class would be a breeze.

The system had worked really well.

He watches the older woman as she gathers her things, waiting for her to approach the counter and silently hoping that Hanatarou offers to ring her up. This register is more intimidating than Kenpachi when he's found out Tetsu and Ikkaku have started a brawl in the Brigand.

[That's a good idea! XD;; Also, augh, just lost my post. XD]

Hanatarou feels a little bit cold at the thought of doing anything other than work when he's at the store, partially because there's always so much to do, and partially because he knows his father watches him on the security cameras some times.

He'd like to think it's because he's all alone, and his father worries about him. Heh.

Still, he personally doesn't mind too much if Tetsu brings homework in with him. With the two of them, it'll likely calm down a little - enough to ensure there'll be times when there isn't much to do, he hopes. "If you're planning to stay on next semester, try to keep the homework under the counter," he suggests. "I don't mind, but my father might. Better to avoid him noticing."

He smiles and greets the older woman as she approaches the counter, a cheerful, "Good morning!" rolling off his tongue automatically. She smiles at him tolerantly, her grin becoming a little more amicable as her eyes move to Tetsu. Hanatarou shakes out a plastic bag and waits for the taller man to begin scanning her things.

Oh. So Hanatarou is letting Tetsu handle this. Right. He can do this. All he has to do is scan the items under the little thing that has the criss-crossing red lights, right? Simple. Easy. An idiot could do it.

"Morning, Tamai-san. How is your husband?" While the woman that is purchasing the items doesn’t often come to the Brigand, her husband does every other Saturday as his wife hosts various little parties, most dealing with knitting or Tupperware or whatever it is women get together to talk about. Tetsu himself has no idea, simply knows that the woman's husband escapes to the Brigand for a couple of glasses of brandy.

As he speaks he reaches for the first item, a loaf of bread that he is careful not to smush since some people got uppity about that--which he doesn't get as it's still bread, even if it is mushed--and turned it over in his hands, searching for the bar code. Upon locating it he shoves it under the scanner thing, waiting for the machine to beep or squeak or blink or whatever it is that this thing did to recognize that he had properly done it's job. Upon no such indicator Tetsu tries tilting the bread, then turning it, then swinging it under the scanner. As none of these yield any reaction from the machine Tetsu can only assume that it doesn't like the bread and is trying to embarrass him in front of his new boss.

Bastard.

With something that might be a huff as the woman begins to tell tetsu about how her husband is doing, Tetsu stretches the plastic covering the bread, trying to straighten out the bar code that is only just slightly wrinkled and why should that make a difference since scanned makers shouldn't make scanners that were so sensitive they wouldn't even read bar codes if they were--oh, finally. Sighing silently in relief Tetsu sets the now scanned bread to the side, toward Hanatarou, before picking up the package of cookies.

He knows the secret to these plastic crinkly packages now. The scanner won't beat him twice in a row.

Hanatarou watches with a tiny smile as Tetsu struggles with the bread, resisting the impulse to step in - he's sure the taller man will manage on his own. Sure enough, after a bit of wiggling, Tetsu straightens out the barcode; the scanner lets out a high-pitched peep, and the bread is thrust in Hanatarou's direction.

He grabs the packet just below the plastic tie, sweeping it down into the first bag. The cookies slot neatly in beside it, and the tea bags. He raises a hesitant hand to ask if Tamai-san would like her detergent in a separate bag, shaking out a second for the small, green bottle as the woman nods and the diatribe about her husband continues unimpeded.

He swings the bags up onto the bench, steadying the bread with one hand as he waits for Tetsu to ring off the sale. He wonders just how much the other man has retained from their earlier conversation and has just decided it doesn't really matter when he hears the tell-tale rumble of a delivery truck out the back.

It would be impolite to leave in the middle of a sale, not to mention stressful to Tetsu. He'll wait. But his shoulders tense in preparation for a dash; he hasn't even warmed up the forklift yet.

Distracted by the sounds of impending delivery, it takes Hanatarou a few seconds to register that Tetsu has somehow managed to get halfway through cancelling the transaction.

"Ah," he begins, touching a finger to the 'cancel' button. The screen ceases its flashing, retreating to the usual blue-grey monotone. "That was 'end', Tetsu-san, to take back the entire sale." He points to the button. "You wanted 'summary', right?"

This button brings the subtotal up on the screen, along with an assortment of payment options. He smiles at Tamai-san. "And will that be cash, cheque, or credit card, Tamai-san?" He gestures Tetsu forward to try again, certain the taller man has been through this process before.

(Nothing in particular, I guess; I'll try to wrap it when I get home from work.)

As soon as Tamai-san turns away, Hanatarou's hand lands on Tetsu's forearm. "Can you, um, just stay here and watch the store Tetsu-san, the first delivery is here and I have to-- but just call me if you need--"

He's halfway out the back door before Tetsu's had the chance to respond, fumbling with the keys to the forklift.
