I saw
ambyr's post about how Hugo nominations close in a little over a month (deadline in March 15) and went "OH SHIT", because the late Hugo voting season last year means I keep thinking it's several months before the Hugos start up again, but it doesn't work like that. So I spent Friday night making a list of Hugo-eligible things I have consumed, and

Yeah, I agree and I definitely prefer that dynamic--it's nicer for the contestants to be a group together against the Taskmaster capriciously judging them. And Greg being mean to Alex is just funny! I think they both really like their roles in that dynamic, haha.
Tim is my favorite in series 1. I feel like he has more of a cheeky persona that makes his cheating come across differently than Dave's, whereas Dave seemed more like he was seriously trying to cheat? Tim's cheating is more like "Oh, he'll see what he can get away with!"
I do like Josh (and he is certainly very Hobbit-like!) but I feel like he's never that funny to me, either on Taskmaster or on other shows. He's a pleasant guy! I just don't think he has that sharpness and quickness that some comedians have, I guess.
For me, series 2 is mostly contestants I like but don't love. I do really like Jon too. But I actively dislike Joe Wilkinson, mostly because he's super tiresome on other shows (he's one of the few common British comedians who I'm always like UGH when I seem him on a list of guests)... but that series does have a lot of good tasks. I really like the pizza ordering task, and I've often used the "concealing a pineapple on your person" task as an example when trying to explain what Taskmaster is to people!
Series 3 is definitely my least favorite of all the series because it has a weirdly high concentration of my least favorite Taskmaster contestants. Like, I think Paul might be my absolute least favorite contestant ever, I totally agree that he was just kind of baffling and very unfunny. Some people seem to think he's hilarious though, which I find confusing... Al Murray is another one of my least favorites and I totally agree that he's boring and offputting, and I didn't care for Dave Gorman that much, and I also don't like Rob Beckett that much (and definitely agree that he has a weird face, haha). So that basically leaves Sara as the one person I like, and like you said, Sara is good but she'd be a midlevel contestant on another series, not a top favorite.
You can also watch Champion of Champions now that you've finished the first five series! Also, let me know if you ever need a google drive link for the later series because I think some of the later ones may not be on youtube and I always source them all from Reddit, haha. :)

Agreed! (I'm now 2 episodes into series 7, and it's interesting from that perspective -- they do some of that inter-contestant sniping and undermining each other, but they're also doing some supporting and playing off each other, and the whole thing is funny, which means I still like it.
re: Tim vs Dave cheating -- yeah, I agree! Tim's felt like "can't blame a guy for trying", but Dave seemed to actually be trying to get away with it. And there was so much less plausible deniability with Dave.
I agree that I like Josh more than I find him hilarious; he was my favorite on series 1, but wouldn't rise to the list of favorite contestants across the series.

I could definitely see Joe get tiresome! especially in a format where he was less diluted by other people.

Heh, well, considering that was the episode that hooked me, basically, I think it's a very good example to use to introduce people to the idea of the show :))
Series 3 is definitely my least favorite of all the series because it has a weirdly high concentration of my least favorite Taskmaster contestants.
I'm feeling that at the moment, so hopefully that means series 8 onwards will all have a more enjoyable contestant mix for me!
I'm trying to think about it and, like, I don't think I actively dislike Paul as a contestant, but I think there was only one task (the domino rally) where I felt like the time spent watching Paul was worth it; for the rest, I would absolutely not miss it if any of the parts with him in them had been cut out of the episode, which I think is generally not true even with the contestants I do dislike. I suppose it's just not my wavelength of humor...

Yes! I was thinking whether I should go on to that or series 7, and decided that I'd get through series 7 first, because I want to catch up to the seasons from which I've seen clips, and I think series 7 is the last of those.

Ooh, thank you! <33 I will definitely let you know when I run out of YouTube content (I've been wondering at what point the YouTube episodes run out, and it's weirdly hard to tell, because they seem to be uploaded in somewhat haphazard order. Like there seem to be 8, 10, and 12, but I'm not seeing 9 and 11 on there, at least so far...)
