It looks like I'm the first in
ikel89's Secret Santa exchange to actually get to open my package, which has never happened before -- neat! :D
My gift from
wintergreen126 arrived way sooner than I had expected -- in fact, before I'd even sent mine -- and it was full of cute and tasty things!
The verbena soap smells DIVINE! (it's my favorite soap scent), the chocolate is exactly my favorite combination for chocolate: dark, with nuts, and a savory component; and I'm looking forward to trying the local-to-MA honey because one of my favorite things about traveling (or, as it were, traveling vicariously via parcels) is trying new-to-me local things.
The vintage owls in the calendar are so cute!
And the impressive-looking book is full of great words like:
...which I'm looking forward to trying out on B and seeing if he knows them/can parse them.
And the little ceramic dragon is ADORABLE, and has gone to live with dragon friends on my shelf.
But also, one of my very favorite things in the package was the card!
Because PUNS! And a BEAVER! :DDD
Thank you so much,
wintergreen126 for all the lovely things, and for getting my holiday season kicked off so early! (I've had a fraught couple of weeks, and some early holiday cheer is much appreciated! ♥!) I hope you have a great winter and a great Christmas!

December 02 → your holiday wish list
I don't have one for RL -- it's been increasingly hard to come up with things I don't yet have that I should own, and when I do, I just buy them for myself. Fannishly, I guess my
Yuletide letter is that? especially as
fandom_stocking doesn't seem to be running this year (which makes me sad, despite its perennial flaws; I peeked at
in_a_peartree, but didn't sign up, because I want to see how this format works before jumping in myself).
December 03 → talk about movies this year
The first movie of 2019 for me was Into the Spider-Verse, which I saw in theaters with the rodents on the last day of winter break, and it was GREAT! I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard at a new-to-me movie as I did at the pigeons scene, and I liked everything else about it, too, the art style and the characters and the mix of poignant and funny. So I was very pleased when it won the animated Oscar and the Dramatic Long Form Hugo.
I also watched Captain Marvel in theaters with the rodents -- or, rather, with L, and O and his friends just happened to be at the same showing (though after I told off group of loud preteen boys who kept talking and rustling throughout the movie and the accompanying father, O's friend E now things I'm cool) -- and all four of us went to see Endgame opening weekend, even had to queue up a bit for that one, even in our tiny, dingy neighborhood theater. And L and I went to see Spider-Man 2: Far from Home at the other theater, because O wanted to watch it with his friends. At home, we caught up on Venom, and Ant-Man and the Wasp while we were in Seattle for college visits and it happened to be out on Netflix. I would rank the MCU ones as Endgame > Far From Home > Captain Marvel > Ant-Man and the Wasp. I enjoyed the latter two, but Ant-Man 2 felt scattered (also, not enough Luis) and felt kind of disappointing after how much I loved the first Ant-Man (to my surprise), and Captain Marvel was fine, but didn't grab me on either character or worldbuilding or plot levels.
I did not watch too many movies on planes this year, partly because KLM's entertainment options were AWFUL on the summer trip -- I made it through, like, 10 minutes of Aquaman and gave up -- but I did watch Ralph Breaks the Internet on my flight to Japan (in business class), and liked it a lot more than the first 20 minutes of the first one, or however far I made it in. On the way back I watched Blakkklansman, which was not my kind of movie but enjoyable, as well as two Hugo homework films.
For Hugo homework I watched Annihilation (pretty and trippy but not the sort of thing I like), Sorry to Bother You (really interesting; it stuck with me more than any nominated movie except Spider-Verse, and one scene in particularly I found really cleverly, transgressively funny, but I didn't actually enjoy it), and A Quiet Place (HATED very person in it XD)
Spider-Verse, Endgame, and Far From Home were my favorites; Ralph 2 was the most pleasant surprise; and Sorry to Bother You and Blakkklansman were the kind of movies I normally would not watch on my own, but between Screen Junkies and the Hugo nomination for the former, I'm glad I did. My least favorite movie of the year was A Quiet Place (technical achievement, sure, but all of them are such IDIOTS).
