Snowflake days 12-13 (indluding a fannish meme)

Jan 13, 2019 15:03

Day 12: In your own space, create your own challenge.

I've tried this with year-round challenges before, and, except for the Community Souced Reading Bingo, which was a lot of fun, that seems too large scale. So I think this time around Iwant to try something immediate, like a meme. Through the confluence of talking about universe fursions with
sunlit_stone in one comment thread and Hogwarts houses sorting with
extrapenguin elsewhere, I'm reminded how much I enjoy this sort of thing, and also it's been a while since I've done a Character Roulette Meme and don't have enough new questions for one, but this is one of my favorite types of question anyway, so let me just distill it to that:

Give me character(s) from a fandom I'm familiar with and a sorting system I'm familiar with from a different fandom, and I'll tell you which house/faction/hive/arbitrary category the character would belong to.

(e.g. Kirk is a Gryffindor, Azula is a Targaryen, Miles Vorkosigan is a Tiassa, etc. just to draw on examples in my icons -- I'm not kidding about really enoying sorting people :P)

Fandoms I'm familiar with: ASOIAF, AtLA/Korra, Avengers (movie-verse only), Babylon 5, Buffy (through s6), Chronicles of Amber, Curseworkers, Demon's Noun, Discworld, Dragaera/Vlad Taltos, Dresden Files, Firefly, Harry Potter, Killjoys (through s2), Kingkiller Chronicles, Kushiel's Legacy, Machineries of Empire, Raven Cycle, Rivers of London, Sherlock BBC, Temeraire, Tortall, Vorkosigan Saga, Warchild, and anything else you know I'm into.

Sorting systems I'm familiar with:
- Hogwarts Houses (both the plain and the Sorting Hat Chats version)
- ASOIAF Great Houses (a la westerosorting)
- Dragaeran Houses
- He*archate factions (Machineries of Empire)
- Terra Ignota Hives
- Daemons (His Dark Materials) -- not quite sorting, but close enough
- MBTI (why not)

Prompts may result in sorting, random waffling, possibly me sorting additional characters from the same fandom or the character into other sorting systemsor vaguely adacent headcanons, or, honestly, who knows. If something strikes my fancy enough that it cries out to be immortalized, there might even be icons.

I need to finish writing my annual review for work, and I need something to procrastinate with, OK

And of course anyone who enjoys sorting as much as I do is very welcome to steal this challenge/meme.

Day 13: In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

This is my favorite Snowflake Day, and the one that stays with me through the rest of the year, because I kind of keep track of how I'm doing against these goals and then tally up my success rate as part of the end-of-year meme. My fannish goals stay largely the same from year to year, with tweaks as needed to both goals and the lists they draw from. So, here we go, for 2019:

- Read at least 52 books. This is generally doable for me, but how easy varies from year to year.
- Read/watch at least 3 things from the updated "to try" list below (which should be kept updated as I keep forgetting things I want to read)
- Make progress on at least 3 "in progress" backburner book series
- Finish at least 5 books I've been stalled in the middle of (new goal this year: my half-finished book situation has gotten ridiculous)
- Read at least 5 books in my "books I own" TBR pile (modification of the Mount TBR challenge, which did not work for me last year in its normal form)
- Read at least 5 Hugo-nominated things I have not yet read (from any year and of any length; see list of interest below to be added to when 2018 nominees come out, probably)
- Successfully complete at least one syncread (new goal this year, because they were a lot of fun last year)
- Read at least 1 book in Russian
- Read at least 1 non-genre book; non-fiction counts for this
- Finish off Random Reading Bingo from 2015 -- reread of childhood favorite, book written by friend/rival/contemporary of favorite writer [something by C.S.Lewis?]. Challenge mode: non-fiction book written 50 years ago.
- Finish out a season of at least one show I'm mid-season on or where I'm an already completed season behind (list below)
- Post at least one new thing to AO3
- Actually comment on AO3 (I did this pretty well last year, but I feel like I didn't actually read much fic after making that goal, so, let's try again with maybe more fic)
- Post at least 3 more posts for the Kairos 30 days meme (I have two half-written entries but managed to only post one "day" last year... in February, and I want to get back on track.)
