Reading roundup and meme

Feb 21, 2016 18:20

I was going to wait to post until I'd finished Natural History of Dragons #2, but I'm stalled on the last 50 pages, it appears, since I got my Kindle back, and a neat fannish meme came along on Tumblr, so:

10. H.P.Mallory, To Kill a Warlock (Dulcie O'Neil book 1 -- not that I'm planning to read any more of them) -- Oh my god, this book was so bad ( Read more... )

Rivers of London for the meme! :D

I've "bought" Hunter of Demons now as it's also 0€ on Amazon in Germany. The next books are 3,09€, though. Not fair!

You can buy SPECTR series 1 as a whole for about $10, at least on Smashwords and Amazon.ca. I did that & thought the series was best read as a whole, rather than 6 separate books, though it'd stand up both ways.

Unfortunately I can only buy from Amazon Germany and their prices mostly vary a lot from the US or Canada ... :-(

Back with meme in a bit, but wanted to let you know that I could lend you the rest of the series 1 SPECTR books if you find you like the freebie. Amazon has this feature enabled, and I think all I need to lend it to you is your email, which I already have :)

I'm not sure what would happen if I lent you a book that I'm still reading and just didn't turn on the WiFi on my Kindle -- I think that would still work. But as I'll probably be done with the first bunch in a couple of days anyway, I can just lend it to you when I'm done, or you could drop me a ping when you've read the first book and let me know if you're interested in reading on.

Thanks ... I'll let you know, okay? I think it'll take me some time to get around to reading these.

Can I use them on the bingo? *lol*

Sure thing! :)

(And, argh, I keep forgetting to snag the bingo card from you and start marking off stuff on it... not that there's been any great variety to what I've read this year so far :P)

My favorite parent-child relationship
Peter and his mum. It's not a soft or easy one, especially as we see in the rare glimpse into Peter's emotions in Foxglove Summer, but it's actually really great to have a protagonist with living parents, with whom he has a normal, realistic relationship, a mixture of love and resentment and also awareness of being shaped by them (to quote Philip Larkin, "They fuck you up, your mum and dad. They may not mean to, but they do.")

My favorite sibling relationship
Are there any siblings we see except for the Rivers? (I don't find the Rivers very interesting, alas...)

I do love the way Abigail keeps being mistaken for Peter's little sister by random people, but of course that doesn't actually count.

My favorite family relationship (other)Other than parent/child, I'm not sure we've seen too many family relationships, have we? I did like what we saw of Hugh and Melissa in Foxglove Summer (she's mentioned as both Hugh's granddaughter and his daughter in my copy of FS, but I suspect that was a ( ... )

Thanks ... nyes, I think Melissa is Hugh's granddaughter.

I actualky quite like the rivers or the idea of rivers as persons/fae.

I like the idea of Rivers/genius loci, but in Aaronovitch's execution they don't feel very magical to me. Like, I really like similar characters in Gaiman's works (American Gods, notably), and even Pratchett's more satirical take on Anthropomorphic Personifications, but BA's just don't feel... numinous enough, so the Rivers scenes mostly fall flat for me.
