8. Lynn Flewelling, Traitor Moon (Nightrunners #3) -- I liked it! I don't have a whole lot more to say, which seems to be the case with these books, for reasons I'm not entirely sure of. They are enjoyable, but they resonate with me less than I'd expected them to, and yet don't get me worked up in a "doing it wrong" way either. They are fun. I want ( Read more... )

"RAAR I WILL HACK YOUR HEART OUT WITH THIS STONE AXE AND GIVE IT TO MY ZOMBIE PRIESTESS TO RESURRECT THE GOD OF EVIL AND DESTRUCTION RAAR" and "my homeland's economic existence is reliant upon strictly limited trade between your people and mine, so it is my sorrowful duty to undermine your diplomatic mission and also maybe poison you. No hard feelings, though."

AHAHA, too apt! XD And, yeah, it was quite the whiplash -- felt pretty much like reading a totally different series in that regard XP

I LOL'd at Thero's dragon bite predicament, too. LF clearly enjoys putting her more prudish characters in situations designed to make them squirm, and I'm entirely on board with this.

He and Beka have a very Wash/Zoe vibe to me

Ah, I can see that! I mean, I like Zoe about a million times more than Beka, but Nyal does have that sort of guileless, happy-go-lucky thing going on combined with actual brilliance in his work.

I'm curious to see what happens with Phoria from here -- whether her character normalizes somewhat to not-exactly-charming but capable like she was in the first book, or continue being an artificial antagonist...

Oh, and on the Rivers of London: Let me quote a non-spoilery paragraph from the spoilery portion of my review:

"It is the urban fantasy magic police procedural I've been hoping to find for AGES. In addition to that, it's got the atmospherity of Neverwhere and the science-mindedness of the Kingkiller Chronicles and the feel of the early Dresden Files books in establishing world and relationships and the modern and wry feel of The Magicians, and is thus just chock-full of things I love."

I think this series may be Relevant to Your Interests as well (although one thing that I'm still waiting/hoping to develop is a really good Team Dynamic; the protagonist has very neat relationships with two cohorts, but not the kind of ensemble I really love to see).

Yeah, same. Like, Beka is built along Zoe lines, but accept no substitutes! And now I kinda want Nyal to be played by Alan Tudyk, or at least someone in his vein, if/when a Nightrunner movie ever gets made. (There is technically a movie in the works, btw - the rights have been bought, at least, but I'm not sure whether it's actually going to go anywhere.)

Eh... I guess a lot of it just depends on whether the character chemistry works for you or not. I'm not gonna say anything else for fear of spoilers/prejudicing you (more than I already have, I mean :P), but I'll love to read your responses to her development!

I do remember you saying something over dinner about how Rivers of London taps into a lit of the best aspects of other genre mainstays, which is certainly a whole bag of points in its favor! :D Yeah, it's starting to sound very much like something Relevant To My Interests...

Oh, interesting, I didn't know a Night4runner movie was in the works, or even theoretically in the works. That's sort of encouraging, considering, you know, the main couple is m/m....

OK, I'm intrigued by your warning re: Phoria... Shall definitely keep you updated on my thoughts on the subject.

The protagonist/first-person narrator keeps making geeky allusions to LotR, Harry Potter, and (though I personally don't care about this) Doctor Who. I just want to buy him a pint and geek out with him over genre media and the science of magic for ages.
