Reading roundup (and the conclusion of the Catch-22 Pact)
56. Naomi Novik, Tongues of Serpents -- I'm... not really sure how I feel upon finishing this book. Sad, I guess? Wistful? Somewhat disappointed, but in a way I think one is meant to be disappointed, though that doesn't make it less disappointing, you know? ( With spoilers )
The quote I had noted was naturally, the most ridiculously morbid one in the bunch:
"He felt goose pimples clacking all over him as he gazed down despondently at the grim secret Snowden had spilled all over the messy floor. It was easy to read the message in the entrails. Man was matter, that was Snowden's secret. Drop him out a window and he'll fall. Set fire to him and he'll burn. Bury him and he'll rot, like other kinds of garbage. The spirit gone, man is garbage. That was Snowden's secret. Ripeness was all."
I really liked that whole Snowden chapter overall, as well - it was quite moving in all its grossness.
I also liked the ending with Orr - it was nice to Yossarian finding hope even at the end of sooo much crap.
And I had no idea there was a sequel! Is it also about Yossarian...or what? Let me know - I am down for another pact, as long as we have a nice break in between. ;)
Anyway, again, WE ROCK! *HIGH FIVES AND SUCH*

I definitely noticed that Snowden quote too -- it's very powerful! But I can't say I liked it :P
I'd heard about the book Closing Time but didn't realize it was a sequel to Catch-22 until I read the afterword my book included and Heller mentioned it there. Sounds like Yossarian is at least in it, but it's set pretty long after Catch-22, so he's like middlee-aged or old in it. Which, hm.
And, yeah, Pact part 2 wouldn't be any time soon! :)
