21. Seanan McGuire, Rosemary and Rue -- I think this is another case where my expectations for the book were too high (mostly thanks to the extreme devotion of Toby's supporters on chickfight), and so I ended up liking it less than I would have than if I'd come to it "cold". I still liked it, and definitely plan to continue reading the series, but it didn't ( Read more... )

These actually ended up a bit longer than they normally do, but I'm glad you enjoyed reading them nevertheless! (And I'll definitely read your movie reviews -- I don't watch movies much on my own, so I mostly absorb them vicariously via other people :)

I haven't read any Merry Gentry, but I know *of* it, so I know what bad points you're referring to :P. I did see a lot of the things I like about Harry Dresden in the Toby books, and, realistically, I expect they'll only get better, since this is the very first one, and the Dresden books definitely developed considerably.

Having finished UA, I'm now fully caught up on Discworld, for the first time ever! (Well, not counting the short stories. I haven't read those, or the Science of Discworld books. But the novels proper, I'm done with.) The Watch ones are my favorite, but I do tend to like the stand alone-ish books as well -- some of my favorites in the Discworld canon as a whole are Going Postal and Small Gods. (Standalones aside, it goes Watch, Witches, Death, Wizards for me.)

I felt pretty done with the Uglies trilogy when I finished Specials, too, just happened to stumble on Extras at the library and when I started reading it, it was pretty cool. I have to say, I think I enjoyed the set-up for Extras more than when the storyline intersected with that from the trilogy proper. The beginning really doesn't feel much like it takes place in the same world as the earlier three, which is intentional and justified by geography as well as the passage of time (but I did have a hard time believing that only three years had passed between Specials and Extras; it feels like a good deal longer, and I think that's an actual flaw in the timing.)
