taming a hammy
First of all thanks for the replies to my other post about my sister's hamster :)
Now here I come with more questions lol
I bought a baby hamster on Tuesday. It wasn't planned... I'd been petstore hopping for frozen pinkies for my snakes but as good as my luck is, the local ones where either out or didn't sell them at all. This petstore I usually avoid at all costs, they're horrible, but I really needed the mice. They had a few hamster on a *huge* plastic bin, and a couple of bigger hamsters where picking on the baby hammy. Long story short, 10 minutes later I was on the car driving home with frozen mice and a baby hamster on the other seat.
I still have the old hammy cage my sister's hammy lived in before she got a bigger one, so I set it up for him and just left him alone for the rest of the day. He had a few bite wounds, the worst ones on one elbow and on his back. Yesterday I tried holding him but he's very skitish and tries to bite me. I tried again today, same thing. He seems to be terrified of me, when he so much as hears me he runs and hides his head on a corner which would be extremely funny as his little butt ends up high up in the air with his little tail straight up like an arrow if he really wasn't that afraid of me.
What is the best way to try to get him used to me? He's in my room, right next to my desk where I spend a lot of time at... I figured he'd at least get used to me being around if anything at all. I haven't tried to pick him up again or bother him too much.
And how can you tell how old is he? I think he's a sirian (sp?) hamster, he's all gray and about 3 inches long and has short fur. The other hamsters he was with where also short haired, yellow-orange and about 5-6 inches. The people at the store said that they never pick up their animals, so I don't know if he's ever been handled before (this store lets their animals breed freely in their display tanks so it could have been born there).
He's quiet cute and funny when he's not hiding from me, I found him half buried and asleep on his food dish this morning :) He doesn't have a name yet but I'm thinking maybe I'll name him Bagoas lol
