Okay...so it's official...we bought our plane tickets! So, on July 6th, we'll be leaving for Paris via San Francisco and on July 26th we'll be returning from London via Chicago! Thus, we'll be here for Sarah and Piete's wedding and will return in time for Erika's IntroDUCKtion and her 18th birthday, Layne's 21st birthday and Sensei Best's wedding celebration!
So...We're starting in Paris so we can end in London so we can see Nick and Rache in their new habitat! :)
In between Paris and London we have to now plan what we'll do. We haven't yet bought our Eurail passes but we're doing our planning and will soon buy them. Any suggestions are welcome.
We're thinking 3 days in Paris, overnight train to Rome, 3 days in Rome, train to Venice, 3 days in Venice, overnight train to Berlin, 3 days in Berlin, overnight train back to Paris, train to Calais, ferry to Dover and then on to London for the remaining 4 or 5 days. We're not going to do the chunnel because we're all claustrophobic and Mike is also deathly afraid of drowning. The travel agent's description of being stuck motionless in the chunnel for two hours thinking about how incredible it was to picture the sea above you made Mike turn green. Once in England, we'd like to do a day trip by train to Bath and/or Cambridge depending if Nick and Rache want to come to London or want us to come to Cambridge for a day.
Some things we'd like to do but don't think we'll have time include a stopover in Prague between Rome and Berlin, a day trip across Switzerland to see the Alps from the train, a stop in Florence, a side trip to Pompeii from Rome, the Romantic Road bus tour in Bavaria, etc., etc.
We're probably not going to try and see the Louvre in Paris or go up in the Eiffel Tower although we'd like to at least see it if not go up in it. Since we have to go in July, things will be very busy. We are going to take a day trip to see Versailles, though. In Rome, we all really want to see St. Peter's, the Colosseum, the Forum and the Pantheon. In Venice, a gondola ride would be sweet. In Berlin, there are a few family members we might try to see along with some sights and shopping.
We're looking at two star hotels and hostels for accomodations and, so far, it looks promising. We're all super excited!
Anyway...would love any and all suggestions or advice!
