So apparently General Motors is killing off the Pontiac division on Monday.
This will mean several things for people like me:
1. The price of parts will skyrocket. Both secondhand parts and universal equivalents will become even more unaffordable than they already are.
2. Replacement parts that are needed will not be coming manufacturer direct, and outside companies will be the only option, to which I might note that quality is usually shaky at best.
3. Insurance rates will continue to go up as the herd of Pontiacs on the market thin out. They will become a commodity or luxury item, and as such, insurance will go up. Also factor in the impending scarcity of parts, and well....a hefty chunk is gone.
4. As the years wear on, and trust me, I plan on keeping my car for years, the ability of general mechanics to work on older Pontiacs will dwindle. Want to test this theory? Try finding a chump straight out of vocational school who can fix a Datsun. 'Nuff said.
5. I need to fix the car because the sparks and wires are going bad, and the MAP sensor is all screwy. Fuck my life. Sparks and wires - not a big deal. Anybody with two hands, $5 USD, and a couple of tools can do it. MAP Sensor? Whole 'nother issue.
