They’re running.
Feet thundering on the brick road as they laugh breathlessly, in their on world, ignorant of the shouting merchant that they’ve stolen from and the disgusted stares of the onlookers. They’re Jinki and Kibum, Onew and Key. Together they’re a force to be reckoned with, separated, they roam lost, empty, a shell of who they are meant to be, supposed to be. Best friends and lovers, they’re connected in ways no one can describe and in ways only they understand. They take a sharp turn into the small street hidden behind a shoe shop that no one really knows of and they run through the maze of the back ways that they know like the back of their hand, ducking down into their hideout in the basement of a young tailor who knows they’re there but doesn’t want to chase them away. They’re breathless as they grin at each other, hands secured together as they fall to the floor to catch their breath. They breath in a tandem, quiet as Key moves closer to Onew, head resting on a soft shoulder as Onew starts a small fire before tearing open the loaf of bread and taking two, one for Key, one for him.
They sit in silence, munching on their breads as they share warmth, shoes thrown somewhere as they wiggle their toes, enjoying the heat they get from the fire and each other. Key smiles slightly when he feels Onew press even closer until they’re joined from hip to thigh, hearts stringed together. Key’s lived most of his life on the street after running from an abusive orphanage, independent and prideful and so, so lost in the big world. The moment he meets Onew, he finds himself somewhere in the sunny smiles and lame jokes the boy is so full of and ever since then, they are inseparable, shedding the skins of their old lives as Kibum and Jinki. I’m Key and you’re Onew. Kibum says bossily as Onew frowns, confused. Why Onew? He asks curiously, flushing when he sees a small, sweet smile blossom on Key’s face. Because you’re gentle and soft and you’re my softie. And that’s that. So, here they are now, together as Key exchanges a smile and a glance with Onew, speaking to each other through small touches and glances because they can. Onew dusts the crumbs off his fingers before leaning in the same time Key does, lips sliding together in a dance only they know. Key knows, knew ever since he’s met Onew all those years ago, that with the older man, he’s no longer lost, no longer a misfit finding his place in the world. Right here, in their hideout with a ratty old couch, a small fire, food and the sweetness of Onew’s smile and hugs is where Key belongs. Right here, is where his (their) place in the world is. Next to each other because they’re misfits that make a jaded but complete puzzle piece.
