Hey guys I'm kind of... putting this everywhere, but it's really really important, so sorry if you see it twice.

This morning I woke up to a delightful advertisement on my Facebook homepage for a film called "The Crazies".

The premise of this film is that a virus of some sort is turning the people of a small town into "violent psychopaths". It's set up like a zombie film, thus pretty much equating people who suffer from mental illness with mindless, murder-obsessed zombies. It is incredibly fucking dehumanizing.

The film has a sponsored ad spot on Facebook, meaning ads and snippets and pictures about it are all over. The first ad I saw featured a picture of a girl being restrained in a mental hospital along with the words "After being infected by a mysterious toxin in the drinking water, the good people of Ogden Marsh go crazy". I marked the ad as offensive, but apparently that only made that PARTICULAR ad go away, and so I'm still knee-deep in other ads for the film whenever I log on.

This shit is extremely stigmatizing and triggering. Not to mention the film's Facebook page being covered with little polls that say things like "How do you know when a friend is crazy? 1. They foam at the mouth 2. Their veins pop out 3. They try and kill you".

The entire premise of this film by necessity says that people who have mental illnesses are inhuman and dangerous.

I have reported Facebook's advertising of it to NAMI, but the more people who write, the more likely it is that something will be done about it. If you have a minute, please please drop them a line. The information is here.

Thanks guys :( I'm also writing Facebook, ftr. Not bothering to write the film company because it's not like they give a shit since they produced this film, but at least maybe I can make FB see how hurtful the ads are.

MRErgrhghghh.

EDIT: I've gotten an e-mail back from NAMI, and they are aware of the film. I think at this point it is more productive to write Facebook -- the only e-mail address I've been able to find for them is info@facebook.com, but there is a "suggestions" box located here in which you can lodge a complaint.

mental health, what the hell, fuck, activism, angry, argh
