Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 On his way home, Ryutaro got an unexpected companion when he felt someone tugging on the back of his shirt. "R-ryutaro-kun? Can I talk to you...about Yamada-kun?"
Ryutaro was ready to say 'no' to Chinen, but when the older boy looked up at him with those imploring eyes, the answer that came out of his mouth was, "Sure, but why?" Chinen's face broke into a wide smile and Ryutaro couldn't help but smile back at him. "What do you want to know about Yamada?"
"What's he like?" Chinen tried to keep his voice casual, but Ryutaro could see the older boy really cared about the answer.
"He hates losing, he loves to show off he's smarter than everyone else, and he likes to act like he's arrogant...when he's really not." Ryutaro stopped when he heard quiet snickering from Chinen. "What?" he asked with frown, irked that he was getting laughed at.
Chinen shook his head, covering his mouth with his hand. "Nothing. It's just...you two are really alike, aren't you?"
"What?! Me and Yamada?" Ryutaro felt a stab of offense. "Absolutely not! We're totally different!" He could tell from Chinen's expression that the other boy hadn't been convinced and rolled his eyes. "For one thing, I would never have let you sit on my lap."
At the mention of this, Chinen turned his head away with red cheeks. "I-I wasn't thinking at the time..."
"Obviously," Ryutaro muttered. He didn't mention that he was surprised that Yamada had actually allowed Chinen onto his lap though. As his thoughts wandered, he remembered his conversation with Yamada in the library. "Yamada told me he liked it. You sitting on his lap I mean."
Chinen's head bolted up with lightning speed at his words. "I know. I...erm..."
"Was eavesdropping?" Ryutaro asked with a smirk.
"No! I...I just happened...to be...in the vicinity...when...you guys were...talking..." Chinen's voice got quieter and quieter until it finally trailed off lamely.
Ryutaro coughed with disbelief. "Yeah, sure. Were you stalking him?"
"No, I was not!" Now Chinen sounded mad and looked mad, pouting at him with a cute face. "Stop making up your own conclusions! I was only..."
In Ryutaro's mind, Chinen's voice faded out and was replaced by Yamada's.
"Also, wouldn't you agree that Chinen looks really cute?"
Blinking, Ryutaro wondered why Yamada's question from earlier would come to him out of the blue as Chinen punched him lightly on the arm. Did he just think Chinen was cute?
"...are you even listening to me!?" Ryutaro came back to the present to find himself facing a Chinen attempting to glare at him furiously.
"Yeah, I am," Ryutaro lied automatically.
"No, you weren't," Chinen informed him sharply. But then he grinned at him to show he wasn't really that bothered.
They'd reached Ryutaro's house and the younger boy was about to go in when he felt Chinen hold him back. Looking at him curiously, Ryutaro waited for him to say something.
After a long silence passed, Chinen finally blurted out, "Do you think Yamada-kun will like me?" Chinen finally blurted out after thinking for some time.
Ryutaro stared at him, uncertain how he wanted to answer that question. He hadn't thought Chinen would be someone who was so straightforward. "Well, I don't see why he wouldn't like you. I mean, he did say you were...cute."
Chinen raised his head up, eyes glowing with hope at Ryutaro's words. For some reason, it made his stomach clench tightly. Shaking Chinen's hand off, he escaped into his house, unable to get rid of the weird warm feeling that was growing inside himself.

Hearing a step behind him, Chinen turned to find himself backed up against a wall with Ryutaro's hands placed next to his face.
"R-ryutaro?" Chinen's voice came out uncertainly as he raised his hands push Ryutaro away. The younger boy was standing much too close for comfort but when he tried to tell him to back off, his throat dried and all the words died.
He became hyperaware of everything, especially two pairs of something warm wrapped around his wrist. He tried to twist out of himself out of Ryutaro hands, but the younger boy had a surprisingly strong grip. He was almost pinning Chinen's arm against the wall as Chinen felt his heart flutter like mad.
"Hey." Ryutaro's voice made Chinen's eyes snap up to meet his. For a long time, the silence was only broken by the twitterings of birds from outside, barely audible inside the still classroom.
Finally, Chinen couldn't take it anymore and had to say something. "W-what?" His whisper was amplified unusually loud by the quiet that filled the room.
Ryutaro's question caught him off guard. "Do you like Yamada?"
Chinen didn't know why, but he flashed Ryutaro an almost guilty look. "O-of course I do," he muttered as he continued to struggle away. Why was Ryutaro acting so weirdly? The younger boy was normally more aloof than this. In fact, Chinen was under the impression he didn't like touching others.
Then he went completely numb as Ryutaro's spoke quietly into his ear, his breath warming the side of his neck. "What if I said I liked you?"
"Eh?" Ryutaro came closer, and closer, and all oxygen flow seemed to get cut off in Chinen's brain. All he could focus on were those eyes, luring him in and lips that were only inches away from his own.
"Kidding~" Ryutaro's forehead knocked lightly against Chinen's before pulling away, taking with him the warmth that Chinen had felt.
"What?" A well of disappointment grew inside Chinen. It was only then that he realized he'd been holding his breath, as though anticipating something. Breathing hard to get more air into his deprived lungs, Chinen jolted awake to realize he'd been dreaming.
Falling back against his pillows, he covered his eyes with the back of his hand, feeling disappointed. Ryutaro had been so close and yet-
He sat up quickly, his face burning hot. What was he thinking? Chinen pounded his head with his fists and shook it, as though he could fling the remnants of his dream away.
Nevertheless, Ryutaro's voice floated back to his ears like an undying mosquito.
"Do you like Yamada?"
"Yes, I do. I like Yamada-kun, I like Yamada-kun, I like..."
"What if I said I liked you?"
Chinen buried his head into his arms, trying to convince himself but could not block out the image of how intensely Ryutaro had looked at him in the dream. It made his stomach back flip like there was no tomorrow.
