Chapter 1 Chapter 2 From then on, Chinen spend most of his lunches and breaks with Yuuto, Ryutaro, and Yamada. Eventually, Yamada got over the trauma of the first day and started talking to Chinen more. Yuuto seemed happy the two of them were now getting along, and would randomly bounce into their conversations from time to time. After some time, Chinen started to get irked at the tall boy for some odd reason. He wouldn't admit it but what he really wanted was to try talking to Yamada alone for once.
Finally, there came a day when Yuuto disappeared off somewhere at the beginning of lunch. In fact, the taller boy had been squirming anxiously in his chair all morning, but Chinen hadn't paid much attention until he heard Yamada mention it.
"He got an email from Keito last night saying he would be calling him sometime around 12, Japan's time," Yamada was telling Chinen as they walked up the stairs.
Chinen nodded as Yamada spoke, not watching where he was going and suddenly slipped on a step. Luckily, Yamada's arm shot out and caught him in time before he fell flat on his face.
"T-thank you." Chinen could feel his face redden with embarrassment. Smiling with amusement, Yamada patted him briefly on the head before going out on the roof. Unknownst to Yamada, Chinen's blush had gotten deeper after touching him.
For a while, neither one of them talked as they ate their lunches. Eventually, Chinen grew tired of the spreading silence and tried to make a bit of conversation. Looking at Yamada, Chinen felt his throat dry up unexpectedly and his voice came out at a higher pitch than normal. "W-who's Keito?"
"Huh?" Yamada blinked rapidly at him as though his thoughts had just been rudely interrupted. "Keito? Oh, he's an old friend of ours. He transferred here a few years ago but then had to move to England at the end of last semester." He paused, chewing on the rice that was part of his lunch. "He and Yuuto had gotten really close together."
Hearing this, Chinen felt a strange warmth spread throughout his body. "Is he ever coming back?" he asked, curious about what kind of person this Keito was.
Yamada shrugged, changing the subject to, "So what did you think of the test on Tuesday?" It was now Thursday, and they were getting the results back after lunch.
"Err...okay, I guess..." Chinen honestly didn't get why everyone at this school got so worked up over their grades, but he supposed that was just the way things were. Either way, it seemed Yamada was paying attention to him since his own test scores were so high. "What about Yamada-kun?"
Yamada was frowning at him as though unsatisfied with his answer but apparently wasn't going to tell him what was wrong. "I'm happy as long as I have the high score."
Smirking mischievously, Chinen couldn't help asking him, "What if I did better than you?"
"As if." The two of them turned around at the sound of a new voice and saw Ryutaro coming over. "No one has ever been able to beat Yamada in any academic subject." Chinen could hear a hint of bitterness in his tone.
"Of course, you should know." The tone of Yamada's reply was condescending.
"Well, there's a first for everything." Chinen piped up to break the sudden tension that was crackling between the two other boys, looking back and forth at them. When he'd caught Ryutaro's eye, the younger boy stared at him for a moment longer before abruptly turning to one side. Not sure what happened, Chinen turned his attention back to Yamada, only to feel a light flick on his forehead.
"I don't think so, pipsqueak." Yamada kept his index finger pressed between Chinen's brows for a second longer before removing it. "If anyone's getting 100%, that'll be me."
Chinen heard Ryutaro take a seat next to him, but was too distracted by the tingling sensation left behind on the spot Yamada had touched. When the older boy wasn't looking, Chinen placed the palm of his hand against his own forehead, smiling to himself.
"What'll you do if Chinen does beat you?" Ryutaro asked, obviously trying to irritate the other boy.
"That'll never happen," Yamada responded confidently.
"And if it does...?" Ryutaro persistently questioned him.
"Then Yamada-kun will have to listen to whatever I say and do whatever I tell him." Chinen surprised even himself when he spoke up. He felt a nervous flip of his stomach when the other two boys stared at him strangely.
"Excuse me?" Yamada was giving him an incredulous look and even Ryutaro was looking weirded out.
Feeling his sudden spark of courage blink out, Chinen looked down to his shoes, trying to think of a humanly possible way to shrink himself but coming up with nada. "I-I mean...o-only if I d-do better t-that is..." he added quietly.
"This sounds interesting..." Ryutaro looked like he was into the idea. "What will you make Yamada do? Hop around all day on one foot? Walk backwards for twenty-four hours? Not study on the day of a test?" he suggested Chinen hopefully.
"That is just lame, Ryutaro." Yamada rolled his eyes at the immature conversation.
"Is it a deal or not?" Ryutaro asked him aggressively. "If you don't accept, that's pretty much admitting Chinen-kun is better."
At that comment, Yamada gave him a furious glare. "I never said that." He slid his eyes over to Chinen, who quickly averted his gaze away. "I'll do whatever you tell me...but only, and only if you got a higher score."
Nodding, Chinen couldn't believe he actually got the other boy to agree to his impulsive deal. Now all he could do was cross his fingers and hope for the best.
The bell rang, signaling the end of lunch, and the three boys cleaned up their area headed down to their classrooms. Ryutaro went on ahead to his first year class while Yamada and Chinen went into their own class. Almost as soon as they sat down, Yuuto skippered in, whistling happily, not even minding he accidentally hit his knee as he missed his chair and ended up on the floor.
"...is he okay?" Chinen leaned over his desk, watching with concern as Yuuto picked himself up and settled himself properly in his chair.
"Hi, Chinen, hi Yama-chan!" Yuuto gave them both a bright smile that was almost blinding. "Great day, isn't it?" He seemed oblivious to the gloominess of the surrounding atmosphere created by their fellow classmates waiting for the doom that was bound to be unleashed once their test scores were returned.
"Um...sure, Yuuto, whatever you say." Yamada patted him on the head, and Chinen felt a hot flash of jealously course through him as he was reminded of the same gesture done to him earlier. Leaving Yuuto to his own bubble, Yamada leaned over to Chinen, whispering, "He's up in Cloud Nine right now. Better to leave him be for the rest of the day. Yuuto always gets like this after a call from Keito."
Chinen nodded in response, turning to attention as the teacher came in and the entire class held their breath as they waited in anticipation. The teacher began to call them up by their names in no particular order. When Chinen heard his name called, he jumped up and pick up the piece of paper, taking it back to his seat without looking at its front.
His adrenaline was rushing at its highest; he never felt this nervous about looking at his score before. Peeking over, he caught sight of what Yamada had.
"99 as usual. Good job, Yamada-kun." The student sitting behind Yamada had leaned over to compare scores.
"Thanks." Yamada noticed Chinen's staring and threw a smug look at him, as though scoffing at him.
Furious that he was being looked down on (he refused to think of it in the literal sense), Chinen flipped his paper over, his eyes led like magnets to the three digit number circled in red at the top of the page. Wait...three digits...?
"A-a hundred?" Chinen's score had caught the attention of the boy sitting behind Yamada and in another moment, the rest of the class had crowded around him, jostling each other to see the only perfect score.
"No way! A perfect?!"
"You have to be kidding me! I'm so jealous~"
"Chinen-kun, what did you do to study? Teach us your secret!"
"Uhh...umm..." Chinen shifted uncomfortably in his seat at all the attention he was getting. Even worse, he could feel the burning stare of Yamada from the seat next door. Somehow, he knew it was not a friendly look. "I-I don't really...do...anything..." Everyone stared at him expectantly. Some people had taken out notepads and pencils. "Err...I-I...review...and...reread the material...?"
Before he could be interrogated further, the teacher called for lessons to begin and thankfully, breathing space was returned to him. Now all that was left was to come up with something to make Yamada do for him...assuming he had the guts to carry it out and that Yamada didn't hate him too much at this time.
A/N: ....how I hate Chinen.
