TM Challenge: How Far?

Oct 29, 2009 22:24

"The thing you gotta remember, Doc, is that anything you want, I can have. Everything you ever wanted, at the drop of a hat. Or some other article of clothing..."

It's an easy line to deliver to the strange little man who keeps following him around - Captain Hammer has plenty of admirers, and plenty of men who want to call him nemesis, and they all blend into pretty much the same morass over time.

Except this one. This... horribly familiar man who seems to bounce back every time - literally, in some cases, if he gets the angle right - and never quite gives up on his attempts to... what?

It's hard to be clear. Apparently it involves lasers.

But eventually, they fall into it, into hero and villain, idol and nemesis, and suddenly those idly spoken words become so much more meaningful.

...anything you want, I can have. Everything you ever...

Captain Hammer takes great delight in proving it, over and over. In achieving fame - fame he deserves, oh yes, but also fame earned through acts of heroism and awesomeness. In achieving a world skewed to his own ends... good press, good women, fast vehicles, and general all-round adoration.

Girls as well. But, he soon realises, just one in particular... the beautiful redhead with eyes that light up rooms, rapture in her smile, hope in every song.

He can have her too.

But it isn't enough. It still isn't enough and the point isn't proven...

...and what was the point again? Sometimes he loses sight of it in the face of... everything else...

...but he knows what he wants. What he wants. And what he can have.

...the world I wanted at my feet...

And then he does. The Death Ray, warm in his hands. The whole world, hanging on his every word, every action.

The whole world, or just one man. Perhaps there's no difference.

Perhaps they've had the same aim all along.

I need you to notice me.

How far would he be willing to go to prove a point?

Too far.
