Character
Name: Maka Albarn
Series: Soul Eater
Timeline: Chapter 47
Canon Resource Links: I'm just going to link this

Affiliation: Trainer

Personality: Maka was described as a serious person that tries hard, this is true to some extent but there's a lot more to Maka than being a serious overachiever although it is a big part of the bits of Maka. She does try hard with a lot of aspects in her life due to her want to be the best she can be and create a deathscythe more powerful than the one her mother created. She studies to get the best grades she can (and even finds the learning and testing parts fun) and she fights hard (though sometimes, sometimes she realizes that she has to sit back and think for a moment before charging on ahead, letting your emotions ALWAYS get the better of you is not kosher).

Maka is not completely serious all the time, she's actually quite friendly to most people that don't appear to be out to cause trouble (much to the annoyance of her more cynical partner, Soul) and has a positive, confident attitude most of the time. As a friend, Maka is as supportive as she can be given her limited view of some things and tendency to lose it with annoying ones like Black*Star and her habit of charging on ahead without really thinking. She--at this point--is aware that she won't always understand or get along with her friends as they are all individuals and understands this, but she still is deeply loyal and supports them. Maka's philosophy in life greatly centers on having courage and not pausing for a moment to consider the cons and let fear overtake you. Though she insists that having courage is nothing special because all people are capable of having courage grow from their fear.

However, there are less than desirable aspects to Maka as well. Actually, some things about her personality can get downright ugly when her emotions run high (and, subsequently, greatly upsets and throws her off making a bigger chance for boneheaded stunts to happen, much to the chagrin of Soul) or when something aggravates the various issues/complexes she has.

Though Maka is quite confident in her abilities and works hard to keep herself strong so she can protect her friends, she tends to become obsessive with perfecting things, making sure her friends are safe and getting the job done even through risking her own life (tackling an immortal werewolf off of London Bridge? Obviously a great idea). Sometimes she even loses her temper and becomes violent. Really violent. Though this anger is most often expressed through the use of a "Maka Chop" which is a smack on the head with the spine of a book she's carrying (which she is carrying constantly, Maka is a regular old bookworm that seems to know more about reading than...other hobbies. Besides word games).

OH AND BY THE WAY, she has an inferiority complex, trust issues and is a misandrist. If you don't know that she's insecure, YOU WILL BE QUICKLY REMINDED. To avoid going into Maka's background territory, let's just say it's her dad's fault and move on. Surprisingly, the misandry doesn't come up as often as one would expect it to. On the downside, the insecurities from her inferiority complex do come up and they hit her hard.

Also she is a gigantic workaholic. Though this shows through positively with her grades...she takes studying far. Really far. Studying three months in advance for an exam, what.

Strengths/Weaknesses: Afff, of course I covered all of this in her personality I always do that. /)_(\

Strengths

→ Maka is an overachiever and very intelligent, so she's good at memorization and calling up information at a moment's notice.
→ Maka is very fast as well; due to her athleticism, she runs fast and has quick reflexes.
→ Maka can cook decently and is very neat and self-sufficient for her age.
→ She has a never-say-"die" attitude in that she essentially never says that she's afraid, she just goes on with the fight. Even if she is afraid, though, she still fights on. Her positivity and bravery really heeeelps sometimes.
→ Her intelligence and reflexes manifest into super-duper adaptability! Even without Soul, she's still willing to charge right into a fight sans weapon and fight it out with her fists and wits.
→ The end justifies the means and it's certainly that way with Maka. Make a deal with a Tim Burtonish devil thing and go insane to fight against Crona? Sure! Trust Medusa even if it's very clear to everyone except Maka she'll betray you? Why not! Anything to get it done properly.
→ Even if she does get stuck in a rut, though, she has a good cry or however she chooses to cope for a moment and then immediately fixes it or makes up for it. Productivity, yay!

Weaknesses

→ Sometimes she's not very good at realizing the obvious when there's other things affecting her emotionally and clouding her judgment.
→ Despite her athleticism, she can't play basketball. She just cannot play basketball. It's not said if she feels the same about other sports, but if she doesn't know the rules she gets confused and can't adapt to it.
→ She gets...obsessed with things once her mind gets set on it and her stubbornness makes her stick to it hardcore. It takes (literally, at some points) a smack in the face to shake her out of it.
→ As said before, she has HUGE insecurities that manifest into issues with trust and just plain not being good enough.
→ She's not actually very physically strong. The only reason she can heft around Soul so well is because of their resonance.
→ She hates to lose. Hates hates hates hates it.
→ About 85% of the time, note: statistic may be exaggerated though, she only has a problem she has to be proactive about because she has a bad temper and is STUBBORN STUBBORN STUBBORN.

First Person Sample:

[Click-click-click--oh, here it goes, the screen turns on to reveal a young girl looking perturbed by what's going on.]

It's a lot to take in, but I think I've got the basic idea of what's going on with this place and there doesn't really...seem to be a way back to where I was. Nothing looks familiar here at all and it looks like there are other displaced people here, too, so there may be a possibility of finding my friends here.

[Her expression changes to an uneasy smile as she moves the Pokégear to focus on a Houndour sitting patiently next to her.]

But Kali's been a big help with getting my bearings here and she's great company, too! [She seems more relaxed when she turns the Pokégear to focus back on her as she giggles.] Not that having a map hurts, either!

Anyway, I'm headed to Cherrygrove City now, but before I do I have to ask if anybody has seen a boy by the name of Soul Eater? He's about so tall [she levels her hand slightly higher than her] with white hair, red eyes and sharp teeth. He also looks really grouchy a lot of the time. If you see him, could you tell him that Maka is looking for him?

Third Person Sample:

Maka went through the contents of her backpack, laying them out in a line so she could examine them more closely. She saw the black dog-like creature, which the device on her other side referred to as a "Houndour", sitting patiently and watching her out of the corner of her eye. "There's even a clothesline here, that...woman--whoever she was--thought of everything," she muttered, not entirely sure who she was talking to. The dog--or, rather, Pokémon--wasn't like Blair, it couldn't speak at all and probably was unable to understand what she was saying. "But I can't, we were still working on infiltrating Arachne's castle!" She emphasized this frustration by hitting the ground with her fist and standing up abruptly. The Houndour started at her action and stood up itself, continuing to watch her warily as if waiting for what she was going to do next.

"We were so close...so close." Maka shook her head and knelt back down again to put the contents back into her backpack, casting an apologetic glance to the Pokémon as she went. "Sorry, but I can't be your trainer. I have other things I need to be doing right now. I need to find my friends or...some way to get back home. I have to rescue Crona..." she trailed off, squeezing the shampoo bottle.

Curiously, the Houndour's gaze turned steady and determined as if it was following exactly what she was saying. It finally made a grumbling sound and walked over to Maka's front where it sat down and stared intently at her. Though Maka was unable to understand it as well, something about its actions came across very clear to her. "You're saying you want to come with me anyway?" she asked, feeling amazed by how much one action could say to her even with her sudden lack of Soul Perception.

The Houndour nodded and gave a short bark for emphasis.

Despite herself, Maka smiled at how endearing its loyalty (which was a bit odd as they hadn't known each other very long at that point) was. "You're not going to let me go until I let you come with me, huh?" As she said this, Maka considered the pros and cons of having the Pokémon come with her while she tried to find her friends and a way back home. On one hand: Soul wasn't around and Maka couldn't sense souls around her anymore, so having an ally in this place that was apparently governed by having a Pokémon as a partner would have been useful. On the other hand: she didn't want the Houndour to get hurt or possibly killed for her sake; she wasn't sure what sort of people or other Pokémon were out there, but surely there was some risk. "You're not scared?"

It appeared visibly offended by her question which caused Maka to laugh and cautiously pat it on the head. "Sorry, I didn't mean anything by it. Well...Houndour..." Maka paused, finishing off repacking her bag and shutting it before standing up. "Hmm--it doesn't really make sense to call you 'Houndour' all the time if there are other Houndour around. I should think of a name for you," she said absently before putting the backpack on. "But--for now--let's get moving, Houndour!"
