Yeah, he's great with curly hair. Several friends go to him also. I found his name on one of the curly girl-type websites and have been going to him ever since.

Plus, the owner has an awesome dog that hangs out in the salon. :)

If this is info you already have, just ignore it -- but as haircut stopgap for friz (my hair is so heavy it only manages to wave, but it frizzes just like curly hair -- when I have enough of it, anyway) there is nothing like "product". I like the John Frieda stuff -- there's a curl-encouraging spray that makes frizz into curls, and also a "Frizz-Ease" "Secret Weapon" creme that will make frizzy hair un-frizzy instantly and even if the hair's not wet (many/most producty things require your hair to still be damp when they go on

I know. I've been flirting with the idea of a pixie cut. There are three problems with this idea:

1) My hair is so curly that I would probably have to get it trimmed every two weeks to keep it looking pixie-ish.

2) If I hate it, it will take TWO YEARS to grow out past triangular.

3) If the pixie cut fails to make me look like Winona Ryder, I probably won't be happy with it, and you can see from the userpic that my nose is nowhere near as delicate as Winona Ryder's.

So it's still long and curly and prone to snarling. And I'm shoving it under a bandanna for work anyway, so most of the time nobody sees it.

Maybe I need a pretty wig.

*nod* I do have some pretty good stuff by Bumble & bumble that's good for keeping the curl and taming the frizz. My big problem on Friday was that I thought I didn't have time to wash my hair and figured my scalp wouldn't bother me, but I turned out to be wrong. I have some seborrheic dermatitis on my scalp and after a few days it really needs proper cleansing. The curly girl sites advocate ditching shampoo entirely and washing only with condition. This does work very well for enhancing curl, but my scalp completely fails to cope with the lack of thorough cleansing. :-/ In a pinch, though, it does help for rejuvenating curl between real washings.

I like mine long, too, though it's currently longer than optimal for styling and for condition of the ends. When it's about 5-6" shorter it has great curl and body because it's not weighed down as much, but is still long enough to pull back if that's what I want. I like having the option to pull it back, put it up, or let it hang loose. :)

The curly girl advice to use no soap takes some working up to, I find -- I only shampoo about once a week now, but I run water through it at least once a day, and do some kind of condition thing. But it took a while to get my scalp to stop over-producing oil.
I found a shampoo I like that seems to wash my scalp without traumatizing my hair so much -- it's Frieda again, the special shampoo for redheads. I don't know what the redhead deal is, except the shampoo itself is red, but it's a lightweight gel-style that really gets my scalp clean without stripping my hair down to nothing.
I hate it when the ends of my hair get all crispy and have to be cut off. It is what is making it take forever to grow out from the short cut, too.
By the way, you have my favorite hair in the world -- true red and truly curly.
