I was reading and giggling over
The 37 Most Awkward English Fails You Can Only Find In Asia, and was suddenly reminded of the time that I traveled to Turkey and Greece with my family in the summer of 1992. It was my first time visiting any part of Asia. At one point we were in Cappadocia, a region noted for its otherworldly (and very phallic)
fairy chimney rock formations. A guide from our accommodation in Göreme,
Tuna Cave Pension, had taken us to
Göreme National Park so that we could watch the sun set in particularly spectacular fashion over the Valley of the Fairy Chimneys. As he drove us to the scenic viewpoint, we passed a sign promising a "panaromic view," which tickled us all greatly. My brother and I started singing the Dead Milkmen's "
My Many Smells" to each other, and that became a running joke between us for the rest of the trip. Hehheh.
I was also entertained by all the signs at food establishments promising such culinary delights as "Nest Coffee" (Nescafe, i.e., instant coffee) and "toast" (sometimes spelled "tost"). I was especially bemused by the one sign I saw advertising "all kinds of toast." How many kinds of toast could there possibly be? It took me a little while to figure out that they meant toasted/grilled sandwiches. :-}
