Anglia News The Duke Of York Work & Stansted Airport Second runway Molehill Green The British Airports Authority (BAA) has now withdrawn their application for a second runway at Stansted airport after a lengthy eight year battle with anti-expansion campaigners.
The new British government have made it clear that they will not back the proposed Stansted airport expanion and they will also withdraw the provision for assisted relocation within the homeowner support scheme. This latest development comes shortly after plans to expand Heathrow airport were scrapped.
David Johnston, Stansted Airport’s managing director, has stated that he and his staff will be working hard to bring new business to the airport. They say that they are committed to working closely with the local community in order to provide jobs and fresh opportunities for business and travel. He firmly believes that the South East Area of England needs a greater airport capacity in order to support the development of UK international trading links.
The campaign group Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE) have said that the fight is far from over. They now want to focus on the future and the forthcoming Government white paper on aviation, due for publication in 2011. While they are pleased with this latest victory their sights are clearly set on ensuring that there will never be an additional runway at Stansted airport.
SSE are endeavouring to ensure that the local community are aware of the significance of the soon to be published National Policy Statement. The ongoing campaign is designed to raise local awareness so that as many people as possible respond to next year’s public consultation. They will be using the ‘Never Again’ theme in a prominent, supporting poster campaign.
SSE will elicit support from various local authorities in the Stansted region . They will also be seeking support from local members of parliament (MPs).
This latest victory is the fourth time that a proposed second runway has been defeated in fifty years. Campaigners now want fifty years of peace without the need to worry about airport expansion.
