Bill O'Reilly is on TV talking about gay marriage. What an asshole. I really can't believe that this is still an issue anymore. I get outraged when I hear the right wing talk about "activist judges." Ummm . . . Is there not an equal-protection clause in the constitution? And this whole slippery-slope thing is outrageous. No, allowing gay marriage is not akin to bestiality or polygamy--so you conservatives can stop making that argument because quite frankly it just makes you sound like morons. We are talking about two consenting adults. I don't know what's with the right's obsession with what people do in the privacy of their own bedrooms. The right is so obsessed with sex it's ridiculous. I can't think of a single thing--not one single thing--that should be illegal between consenting adults. The government should work to protect its citizens so that they can live their own lives, not so they can have control over the shape of society. Repression of any kind--of action, of speech--always results in a major backlash. Why can't the right realize this?
And I don't even know what is going to happen with the Supreme Court. Quite frankly, I get chills when I think of it. O'Connor was really the only swing vote on the court. She was a republican, but she was a smart, not ideological republican. If she's replaced with another Rehnquist, Scalia, or Thomas, I seriously fear what will happen. Science, personal freedom, and equality will all take major steps backwards. And do you know what drives me crazy? The places where science and culture are developed are almost exclusively in the liberal parts of this country. The people who take advantage of and emulate the culture of the liberals are often the people who vote conservative! Can't they see that the forward movement of society is almost always grounded in some sort of liberal ideology? And the people who benefit most from liberal economics are also often the people who vote conservative. I just don't get it. And what's with political talk being a faux pas in America? Why can't we sit around a dinner table in America and debate politics? Why can't we talk about politics when we meat someone new? Why are we so fucking scared of offending people? Political policy should be shaped through the plural debate of the people. Politics is so important, not to talk about it is ridiculous. Everyone should fight to have his or her voice heard. And you know what? I may disagree with nearly everything someone like Michael Savage may say, but at least he's standing up and using his voice and contributing to the plurality of thought. We should all invoke that power. Arg! I'm getting annoyed just typing this . . .
. . . Stepping off my soapbox . . .
Also this is my first time being in America for the Fourth of July in the last three years. Crazy, huh?
