I went back to work today after being off for a few days. To learn a resident passed away while I was off. Now some say well you work in Geriatrics so it's not that big of a deal. Well, not to make light of his death, but yes in that regard it is expected.
The thing that was different he was a Rev. The last few weeks he had gone madd, I thought he needed a psych consult actually. In hindsight, he must have sensed his own demise. He was calling out so much in the end, I even once called him on it asking him if he needed to seek a higher power. He would yell, "help, help" I truly felt he was afraid to be alone.
That is the thing about working in Geriatrics again, you are always dealing with contemplation. It's a different kind of contemplation from at-risk-youth. Youth are impulsive and without hesitation fearless even. Elderly are always in hesitation, or reflection of some sort. As if their years lived incites this urge to share their knowledge of what went wrong, or good. Most of us, myself included are always too busy to take time out to listen to their stories....
I often wondered what was it that he feared so.... What deed or act or notion had him at such an un-rest.... It's odd how we "humans" deny or reject a higher power, yet, when times of need arise or turmoil come about I have yet to see a human not seek out that higher power.... Be it what you may, we all seem to fall prey to that need.
I just think we as humans are such interesting creatures, we are always seeking something that will drive us and make us feel.....
