Even if Harper's numbers are off, Wal-Mart is still using its might to force its vendors to sell their products at an unprofitable price, which is my main concern. This eliminates more of the competition and ultimately puts the consumer at the whim of Wal-Mart and a few preferred vendors.
I think that Unions can be self serving. I worked for one union (ILWU) and had my vision skewed because they really appear to be in existance for the benefit of their members, not out to just reap the profits. The union reps where I am working currently (GMP) seem to be a bit more self serving and I could imagine why some members of the less concerned and active unions would want to get out of them.
I think unionizing Wal-Mart could be helpful, but I think we would be better off investigating some of their business practices and levelling the playing field a little bit in favor of Wal-Mart's competition. I don't think Wal-Mart should be destroyed, I just think it should be operating differently than it is now. If it were broken up into regional entities, I think its capacity to affect the national and global economies would be reduced.
Thanks for writing back. I always enjoy reading your opinions.
