It was more a stab at irony than anything else. That is, it seems quite clear that one could not be a facist unless they straight-forwardly made themselves into one, or as the language suggests, "styled" his/herself to be so politically oriented. Political alignment seems straight-forwardly a kind of property that seems only assignable to a person if it is self-assigned, that is if you take political labels as merely a reflection (synthetic or otherwise) of one's personal views and actions.
I'm fairly certain this isn't even a debatable conception... at least not in a meaningful way...
