Yours truly would have earned top ten honors with my score of 26.325 if not for the ineligible mod status thing but I'll indulge in a mock template banner anyway. XD
First through Third Place and Honorable Mention contestants will be able to download and use personalized prize buttons after they are posted at the conclusion of the results announcements. They'll look something like this mock-up (though without the words "smug club"):
The scores are determined including a weighting for how important and difficult certain questions are as voted by you, which explains the strange-looking point scores. All scores are tabulated in the
Part 3 - complete results post.
Questions and Answers
Here are all the questions from part 3, the list of answer choices and a discussion. In each case the right answers are marked in bold, and sometimes more than one answer got full credit. Occasionally the mods opted to give half credit for some answers; those are marked in blue.
Disclaimer: The mods know that it isn't always easy to pick exactly what the correct answer was out of the imperfect choices we gave you. We have tried our best to come to a consensus over the fairest choices for the right answers. We know not everyone will agree, but to keep things from getting hugely complicated, our decisions are final.
1) What are the Deathly Hallows? [Key Question]
- Another name for horcruxes in general
- The Hogwarts Founders' relics in particular
- Other relics, talismans, or objects
- Something else
- Graves, tombs, or graveyard(s)
- The land of the dead
- Hiding places for horcruxes
- Somewhere else
- Souls of the dead or other spirit-type beings or essences in general
- Saints or holy beings/spirits/essences
- The voices/beings/spirits/essences just beyond the veil, in particular
- Someone else
- A magical convergence of forces or an event, like Halloween
With a lot of theories out there, we really tried to cover all the bases. The Hallows were relics, but not Horcruxes in general nor the Founder's relics -- though by coincidence one of them happened to be a Horcrux, just not the one most people anticipated.
2) Where are Harry and Voldemort on the American cover? [Key Question]
- Hogwarts
- Beyond the Veil or other Land of the Dead
- Godric's Hollow
- An arena or coliseum
- Some other previously introduced place (or portion/version of) in the Wizarding World
- Someplace else new
This is the climactic moment of the whole series as Harry is about to catch the Elder Wand and Voldemort is about to meet his doom, inside the Great Hall.
3) Who or what are they looking at?
- Fawkes
- Hedwig
- Snape
- Pettigrew
- Ginny
- A patronus
- A dragon
- Gryffindor's sword
- A broom
- Some-thing/one else
Alas, we didn't give a choice for "a wand," so we'll have to settle for "something else".
4) Who are the shadowy figures that appear to be watching Harry and Voldemort on the American cover?
- Death Eaters
- Souls/Shadows of the dead
- Hogwarts students and faculty
- Witches and wizards in general
- Muggles
- A mix of different people
- Something else
Basically every single person in the entire series. We decided to give credit not just to "a mix of people" but also to each group individually: Death Eaters, students, wizards in general.
5) What is the dragon on the U.S. Deluxe cover?
- Norbert
- A Horntail
- An Australian Opaleye
- Welsh Green
- Something else
The type of dragon was never revealed; its eyes are the way they are not because it's an Opaleye, but because it's blind. And no, it wasn't Norberta. "Something else" was the fairest option.
6) What are the stops in the trio's journey on the dragon? [1 point each for each correct prediction]
- Eastern Europe
- Somewhere else outside the UK
- Hogwarts
- Spinner's End
- The Burrow
- Privet Drive
- The Ministry of Magic
- Somewhere else in the UK
Our question would have been more interesting had they been using the dragon for travel, instead of simply escape. They don't leave the country, and get off the dragon somewhere in the UK.
7) Where are the Trio on the UK cover?
- Gringotts
- A dragon's hoard
- Malfoy Manor
- Egypt
- Hogwarts
- Somewhere else
A lot of fandom guessed this one, and a lot of fandom was right.
8) Who is behind Harry on the UK cover?
- Dobby
- Kreacher
- Another house elf
- A goblin
- Something else
Widely believed to be an elf when the cover was released and there was much argument over Dobby vs Kreacher, that turned out to be Griphook the goblin back there.
9) Will Hogwarts reopen? [Key Question]
Yup.
10) If Hogwarts reopens, will the Trio be regular students?
- No, never again
- No, not until the following year
- For the entire year, yes
- For part of the year, yes
We expected, like a lot of fandom, that we would learn more about the aftermath of days and weeks and months and years after the battle ended; but instead we jumped from the day of Voldemort's defeat to nineteen years later. So while of course we know the Trio were not students during DH, we have no idea if they went back the next year, and so we credit both "No" answers.
11) If Hogwarts reopens, which of the following students will return? [1/4 point each for each correct prediction]
- Ginny
- Luna
- Neville
- Draco
- Crabbe and/or Goyle
- Pansy
- Blaise
- Theodore Nott
- Zacharias
- Dean and/or Seamus
- Padma & Parvati
- Lavender
- Ernie
- Hannah
- Susan
We were left to make a lot of assumptions with this question, which is resulting in all but one being counted as correct. We assumed that if a student was mentioned at the battle, that they had been at Hogwarts that year unless explicitly told otherwise. We also assumed, with attendance by purebloods being compulsory and the vast majority of Slytherins considered as such, that Blaise and Theodore were in attendance. There is no mention of Susan so we'll leave her off.
12) If Hogwarts reopens, who will be Head Boy?
- Harry
- Ron
- Neville
- Ernie
- Theodore Nott
- Someone else
No confirmed answer, no credit. Interesting that we didn't put Draco as a choice since we thought he wouldn't be coming back -- he had just conspired to murder the Headmaster, after all -- but he returned under the new regime and was a more likely candidate than most.
13) If Hogwarts reopens, who will be Head Girl?
- Hermione
- Susan Bones
- Parvati
- Padma
- Pansy
- Someone else
No confirmed answer, no credit.
14) If Hogwarts reopens, who will teach DADA?
- Aberforth
- Lupin
- Moody
- Tonks
- Krum
- Fleur
- Bill
- Another Weasley
- Kingsley
- Another Order member
- Someone else we've met
- Someone new
Again our assumptions coming through: we did not anticipate that Voldemort would control Hogwarts from the beginning of the year, so all our choices were good guys. If you knew it would be Amycus Carrow, minor Death Eater first introduced at the end of HBP, go to the front of the class; we'll credit "someone else".
15) If Hogwarts reopens but the trio do not attend, what will become of the D.A.?
- It will be inactive
- Neville will take it over
- Ginny will take it over
- Luna will take it over
- Someone else will take it over
- Neville, Ginny and Luna will revive it without a singular person in charge
In Neville's words: “We lost Luna at Christmas, and Ginny never came back after Easter, and the three of us were sort of leaders."
16) Does Harry have contact with or journey beyond the Veil? [Key Question]
- Yes, he will travel through it
- Yes, he will somehow communicate with those on the other side, without having to go himself
- No
He does visit a place on the border between living and death, yes; but the Department of Mysteries was never returned to, and the Veil never mentioned.
17) How will Harry use Sirius's two-way mirrors? [1 point for each for each correct prediction]
- He will use them to communicate with Ron and Hermione
- He will use them to communicate with Ginny
- He will use them to communicate with Remus
- He will use them to communicate with Aberforth
- He will use them to communicate with Sirius beyond the veil
- He will use them to communicate with someone else
- He will give them to others to use
- They will not be used
There he is, Mr. Misuse of Goats, right in our list! We're pretty pleased we even managed to have Aberforth as a choice. Congratulations to both of you who guessed this!
18) Is anything significant or useful in the Room of Requirement?
Yup.
19) If there is anything significant in the RoR, what is it? [1 point each for each correct prediction]
- A Horcrux
- Something Voldemort wants to make into a Horcrux
- Something that can destroy Horcruxes
- Information about Horcrux locations
- The Mirror of Erised
- Another Sorcerer's Stone
- Something else
The lost diadem of Rowena Ravenclaw, which was visible in HBP and some people in fandom had correctly spotted.
20) Will Harry travel through time? [Key Question]
No more time travel for Harry.
21) If Harry does travel through time, what events will he visit? [1 point each for each correct prediction]
- 10/31/81
- The Riddles' murder
- The Founders' era
- The defeat of Grindelwald
- Another time
N/A
22) Who will join Harry, at the beginning, on the Horcrux hunt? [1/2 point each for each correct prediction]
- Ron and Hermione
- Ginny
- Neville
- Luna
- Another student
- Lupin
- Tonks
- Another Order member
- Dobby
- Kreacher
- Somebody else
- Nobody else
Just Ron and Hermione; one of the most agreed-upon things in the whole game.
23) Who will join Harry, later in the quest, on the Horcrux hunt? [1/2 point each for each correct prediction]
- Ron and Hermione
- Ginny
- Neville
- Luna
- Another student
- Lupin
- Tonks
- Another Order member
- Dobby
- Kreacher
- Somebody else
- Nobody else
Although other people crossed paths with the Trio, sheltered them for a while, saved their lives, were rescued by them, or even -- in the case of Griphook -- helped them acquire a Horcrux, no one joined them permanently as partners in the quest to destroy all the Horcruxes, so we decided "Nobody else" was the best choice.
24) How will Harry learn how to destroy Horcruxes? [1 point each for each correct prediction]
- Hermione will figure it out
- Aberforth
- Ollivander
- Snape
- Dumbledore will have left instruction some other way
- Somebody else specific
- He will employ trial and error along the way
- He won't
Hermione does a fine job accioing the Horcrux books out of Dumbledore's office and identifying the few things powerful enough to destroy Horcruxes; but Dumbledore also gets credit, for both the hint of leaving Harry the sword and for the message he left with Snape about Harrycrux.
25) Will Harry definitely believe he has to die to defeat Voldemort? [Key Question]
And he walked through the Forest to do it.
26) Will Harry die in the course of defeating Voldemort? [Key Question]
- Yes, permanently
- Yes, he will die, appear to, or visit the land of the dead but will return (possibly damaged in some way)
- No, but he will suffer some significant loss (as of magic) or injury
- No, and he will be essentially unscathed
We're happy with the way we covered the bases here. Harry lets Voldemort try and kill him, and goes to a place from which he could have decided not to return; but return he does.
