This post from
bridgetminerva reminded me of the infamous question "What Would Jesus Do?"
In her post, she links to an article about a man who believes we should be asking "What Jesus Meant."
I happen to agree with the idea, in part because what Jesus would DO in any given situation isn't really applicable to us.
Assume you're, like me, a Christian who believes the miracles recorded in the New Testament are genuine.
You're walking down the street and see a blind man sitting in the gutter with a cup. He's clearly begging.
Q: What would Jesus do?
A: Forgive the man's sins, Heal him and send him on his way.
See what I mean? I can't forgive the man's sins any more than I can restore his sight. Jesus could, and did, do both.
I was introduced to the "What would Jesus do" movement by one of my sisters. My reply was, in my opinion, typical of me.
"Well, I think I can manage pissing off the government and entrenched religious leaders to the point where they execute me, but I don't think I can manage the whole 'come back from the dead' thing."
I paused.
"Hey, do I get to heal the lame? Healing the lame would be COOL. If I get really good at it, can I make ANYTHING that's lame, not-lame? Like T.V. shows or the government?"
Naturally, my sister walked off without bothering to reply. My siblings know better than to encourage me.
