013. Alice in Wonderland, Mothers Day and spring

I went to see Tim Burton's 'Alice in Wonderland' this Wednesday and really enjoyed it. It was weird and wonderful, pretty and full of lovely little details. I particularly liked Stephen Fry's Cheshire Cat and squealed every time he got on the screen :) Alan Rickman's Blue Caterpillar was great, too (was he really smoking opium?! :D), and the rabbits were brilliant. Johnny Depp was wonderfully barmy as the Mad Hatter - and how could I NOT love the character, when he was wearing a kilt and mismatched stripy socks, or when he kept switching to speaking with a Scottish accent?! Mmmmm. I might be easy to please but I do love all the Tim Burton clichés. :p I do think you have to remind yourself that this isn't based directly on the original book but is a slightly different story. I saw the 3D version but IMO the film would work just fine without the 3D effects.

Tomorrow is Mothers Day in England. I actually remembered this time - how could I not, with all the advertising everywhere?! I got a card to Matt's mum today and I'm making her a chocolate cake (old-fashioned chocolate cake from Nigella Lawson's 'Feast'). I'll send my mum and grandma something in May as that's when Mothers Day is in Finland, but I'll probably talk to mum on Skype tomorrow so I'll wish her happy "English Mothers Day". :)

It's still pretty cold over here and I still need two blankets in bed at night, but it does seem like spring is finally here (see photos below), yay!

^I've been doing some crochet recently, I really quite enjoy it. This is going to be a cushion cover.^

^A sign on the window of Matt's favourite chip shop in Wolverhampton. :)^

^In Wolverhampton yesterday. I hope these nets don't mean that these trees will be cut down soon... :( A lot of trees have been cut down recently, at least around the ring road. Matt told me that apparently it's because the Council thinks that birds nesting in these trees would get disturbed by all the traffic near the trees. Surely the birds already know this?!? *facepalm*^

^Crocuses in Wolverhampton.^

^And some more.^

^A random crossing^

^There's a lot of snow drops just across the road from our house. :)^
