PINAY Sa Seattle Launches New Identity in Commemoration of Philippine Women’s Day of National Protest

Seattle, WA - In commemoration of Philippine Women’s National Day of Protest, former chapter of Gabriela Network Seattle is excited to announce the launching their new identity, PINAY sa Seattle (PINAY for short). The term “Pinay” was coined to identify women of Filipina of descent. To celebrate the launch of their new identity, PINAY will host a house party on Friday November 3, 2006 at 8pm at 7605 39th Ave. S, in Holly Park. The house party will help fundraise for the newly formed organization.

The GABNet Seattle Chapter was established in January 1986 and revived in January of 2001 after a brief period of inactivity. Since its inception, the Seattle Chapter has been involved in educating the community on issues concerning the human trafficking of Filipina women and children, systematic gender oppression, domestic violence, LGBTQ concerns and human rights violations from an anti-imperialist framework.

In the past 5 years, the Seattle Chapter has also been involved with putting on cultural productions, integrating the organization’s politics through various cultural art forms and working in collaboration with other progressive women’s organizations and individuals in the community. Among these were “Veil” - a political fashion show featured in October of 2003 which highlighted the various issues concerning Filipina women, U.S. occupation of the Philippines and militarization; and “Umaga” - a theatrical play held in March of 2006 highlighting Filipina women and domestic violence.

PINAY sa Seattle is an all volunteer organization of Filipinas organizing women of Philippine to descent and working in solidarity with other progressive women’s organizations to build community through education, cultural work, leadership development, advocacy and campaigns. PINAY is also part of a broader people’s movement, known as the National Democratic movement in the Philippines, to defend the rights and welfare of the Filipino people and to fight for genuine democracy and sovereignty of the country against US imperialism.

The women of PINAY have chosen this day, October 28th, as their official born day in honor of the women of the Philippines who organized themselves to take a stand against the Marcos dictatorship 34 years ago. Since then, October 28th has been sanctioned Philippine Women’s National Day of Protest to continue the ongoing struggle against the current Philippine government.

The women of the former GABNet Seattle Chapter would like extend their warmest thanks and appreciation for the years of support from their friends, family, allies and surrounding community as they leave that era behind and begin a new chapter of organizing. PINAY is excited to continue to strengthen their work and build solidarity with other progressive organizations committed towards working for social change. PINAY is ready to come full force in helping to build a community of Filipinas to support one another their sisters, mothers, aunties, and lolas struggling abroad.

Please join PINAY as they celebrate the launching of their new identity on Friday Nov. 3rd, where they will host a house party fundraiser. PINAY is currently planning an all women’s hip hop show to be held in December to raise money for a Human Rights Campaign as part of the NW Alliance for Human Rights in the Philippines.
