So! Hello sporadically posted in journal! How are you? Neglected? I'm so sorry.
I went to the Graduate History Methods course this evening to listen to what the new crop of grads had to say about theory. I sat quietly in the corner and listened. I thought that maybe my two years spent on my MA had been a silly waste; however, after class tonight I realized that it was just really good prep for further historical study/thought. The class is being taught/led by my committee chair, who graciously allowed me the chance to sit in on classes. I'm so glad I asked if I could and super happy he said yes. If nothing else, it is helping me to think about further projects I'd like to work on and a PhD program.
I was turned down for the job at the museum. Major bummer there. However, my interview did let the Assistant Director know that I'm interested in working in a museum or an archive. She's been funneling information to me to help me get some resume points. Luckily I get to go to the Montana History Conference and take part in their archive workshop. Someone graciously paid for the registration fee and a few other fees, leaving me to pay for dinners, lodging, and gas money. So that'll be great. The Assistant Director also sent me a scholarship opportunity to receive training for archival work. There's a workshop in DC that I'd love to apply for, but I'm not sure that I can afford to stay in a DC area hotel for two weeks (assuming that I'd get the scholarship to pay for my plane ticket and registration fee). I'm also not sure that they'd even accept me as I don't technically "work" in an archive, and those are the individuals that receive priority registration. In any event, this is all very exciting and hopfully my low self-esteem doesn't stand in my way.
As for the museum proper, I'm working on gathering info on old pharmaceuticals and what they were used for so that they can (hopefully) put together an exhibit. I've already cataloged them all, now to find out what they do...and why.
I start tutoring again tomorrow. We're doing Russian History, which we've covered before. BUT! This might be a really good opportunity to apply some of the crazy theory stuff I've read over the summer.
On the home front: Colter, Denna, Zissou, and Marlowe are all doing very well. I'm so thrilled my little family is so nice and happy. So, while I feel like I'm failing at other things, at least I succeed at that. Furthermore, we succeeded in replacing the nasty siding on the west side of the house with the help of my Father-in-Law. It went really smoothly and it looks so much better (even if it is a different color). If it's nice tomorrow, I'm going to paint a section of it in the new color we picked out so we can see if the color is right. YAY! Our house won't look like it's straight out of 1983!
And, well, that's it really.
the museum,
home improvments = the devil's work,
now that i've graduated what do i do?
