Futuref Self, Future Stuf

When envisioning my future self, this is what I see.
I want to be as self-sustaining as I can. I want a garden where I grow cilantro, tomatoes, bell peppers, lettuce and jalapenos. I want to make my own pet food. I would like a few hens so I can have my own eggs, but that might be a bit more difficult to pull off than the garden alone.

I will give my children the option of having soda or dessert, not both. My children will know where food comes from, and I will never forget where it comes from. There will not be this disconnect between farm animals and food. Children should not wonder where the meat at the supermarket comes from. They should know - it comes from cows. Your chicken nugget comes from chickens. Disconnects in diet are not healthy.

For the near future self, if I stay in Austin, I will join the local cooperative shared farming group. For $120, you get four weeks of food grown here in Austin. If you have a little less money but more time, you can work on the farm a few hours a week for payment toward your groceries. They are delivered at your door once a week, or you can pick them up. They leave out things that can't be grown here, and meat, but it's really not that bad. My groceries at the apartment were usually $100 a month, and that was with eating out a lot and eating poorly when I did go out.

I'm thinking more and more about staying here. Part of it is that I can't afford to move somewhere and have a sub-prime job, since most places are more expensive than Austin.
