Freudenschade...

Our daughter is back at college after a nice month off. It was hard to let her go, as that is the longest we will see her for a year.

Today's term? Misery over someone else's happiness. It isn't complete misery for us, but.. unless some snafu happens, our daughter has an internship in DC this summer, which means we might see her for a week before ( Read more... )

an internship is pretty impressive though!

I had never heard of that movie... sounds like you had a glorious day though :-)

It is impressive! She's had progressively bigger ones each summer, but up until now they've all been local (we live in our state's capitol city). Going to the other side of the country for the summer will be thrilling and expensive for her, but sad for the parents.

"Hidden Figures" is about several key black women who worked for NASA during the Cold War Space Race program. They dealt with racism as well as sexism, and still managed to accomplish big and important things.

ohhhh! yeah! I have heard of that movie. I just couldn't remember the name, but I've got the image from the poster in my memory. Glad it was worth a view!

i love that your cat has a therapy human. i'm glad she's doing better. one of my coworkers, her daughter's a freshman in college and managed to keep a cat in her suite for a length of time. the cat was discovered and is now living with my coworker. not that i would ever suggest your son try to hide the cat in his dorm room. ahem.

congrats to your daughter! she wants to go into politics or the civil service, doesn't she? because dc sounds fabulous. sucks for you and hsh, tho. :( you should go visit her. :D

I think that if our son tried to smuggle the cat into his dorm, she'd get busted the first time he left the room for more than an hour and she wandered back and forth howling that "Wauw?" sound of "Where is everybody?"

Our daughter does want to go into civil service, so this is an incredible opportunity for her. Sad for her parents, but amazing for her! We do plan to go visit her (HSH has never been back East, and would like to see the sights), and have threatened to go into her office and watch her work. You know-- exercising PMT (Parental Mortification Technique). Wouldn't want those skills to get rusty!

I sympathize on missing the college-aged girls but her internship sounds like an incredible opportunity. What will she be doing?

I still want to adopt two cats but I'm not 100% there yet. I'm not quite ready for the responsibility.

I've been wanting to go to the movies lately and that sounds like a something I would like.

She'll be working for one of the large government agencies (I don't want to say which one), and won't know the details until she starts. It probably will not involve answering telephones and talking to the angry/confused/less-than-sane constituency, like last summer's internship at the state Capitol.

Have you thought about adopting one cat at a time when you're ready? Though if you mean something like, adopt two cats who need to be together, that would be even more awesome! They're hard to place.

When we went to the shelter looking for a cat that was at least 1 year old, the staff were SO happy we were there. It's just not very common, and nobody wants older kitties to be euthanized because it's easier to find homes for kittens.

I'd like to adopt two older cats that are already together, if possible. That way I know they'll get along well with each other. I don't want kittens because while they are cute, they would be too much work and I don't have patience for that anymore :)
