We're up in Oregon visiting my mother, after an 8-hour car ride. HalfshellHusband had to stay behind, as he's only good for 1/2 hour in the car right now before his hip starts hurting. I sure hope that goes away over time.
Yuletide stories were opened up on Christmas, and received two stories this year, both for Battle Creek:
Blue Peter (Milt/Russ, PG-13). This features one of my favorite tropes, "posing as a couple" when the characters aren't even dating. Russ is crabby and injury-prone here (the same bad luck that led to him being kidnapped in a show episode) in a case-fic setting. It makes me miss the show all over again. :D
Nature Of The Game (Milt/Russ pre-slash, PG-13) was a bonus story. It's written from Fontanelle's POV, with terrific characterization that captures Font's good-hearted nature while making it clear that he is not naive. The overheard glimpses of Milt and Russ, and how their relationship altered after the show's final episode, are really well done. What a treat!
In piling through the other Yuletide offerings, I passed a lot of fandoms I had never heard of-- and it's surprising how popular some of them were this year. Yuri on Ice, podcasts, video games, web series. All kinds of stuff.
I'll keep poking through the listings. There are some fandoms I know I'll want to read (two Band of Brothers stories thus far, one a modern AU that surprised me by maintaining the characters really well in an updated setting, and another that started quite well and then mysteriously veered off into the characters having superpowers, which... I don't even know).
But going through the list is also how you find the unexpected, such as
A Very Grumbly Day, a Winnie-the-Pooh/Star Wars story in which stormtroopers invade the Hundred Acre Woods. Read it and you'll see THAT clearly needed to happen! \o/
All right, off to bed now that teen-daughter is out of the bathroom. A 45-minute shower after midnight, when two other people need to use that same bathroom... REALLY? *sigh*
