Wonderful, sweet and exactly what I needed to soothe my nerves in anticipation of tonight's finale. Love Peter's protectiveness and the fact that he agreed to read Neal a story - awwwww ♥
Hehe, I have no idea what to expect and what will happen, but based on previous seasons, having a minor nervous breakdown in anticipation of the finale seems to be the appropriate way to feel :D
It's funny that the prompt finally worked its way around to this, but once the idea came I couldn't resist this setup. Reluctantly nurturing Peter never gets old for me, and crabby but accepting Neal is one of my favorite versions. :)
I loved that story so much as a kid, and it was completely neglected in my own kids' education. I read it to my son at bedtime long after he should have encountered it himself... and just this last year he re-read it. There's so much wonderful weirdness in that story.
I'm so glad you liked this, and thought it was worthy of the kickoff! There's a lot of pressure being the first one, somehow. :)
Have you ever read "The True Meaning of Smekday"? That's another one that is written for kids, but I can't imagine that it's more fun for them than for adults. The satire/irony/absurdity in that book are pure gold.
Upon re-reading Tollbooth, I unexpectedly fell in love with the Humbug, which I think is new from reading it as a kid!

What a lovely way to start off this round - I hope, when it's my turn, that I can write something as good as this.

So much of the story still resonates with me - I never used the expression "Killing Time."
