When Dean first spoke to him, Lucas noticed his green, green eyes. Those eyes didn't pass over him or pin him suffocatingly flat. They saw him, and Dean hoped and waited before letting it rest.
Lucas drew the answer on paper instead.
The next time, Dean talked about his own pain and loss. He didn't ask but Lucas knew, and drew a picture of what he couldn't say.
Later, when the lake punished him for tattling, Dean saved him.
It's all right.
Dean listened, just like Mommy. When Lucas finally had the words, he knew exactly who'd brought them back.
