The morning light filled Michael’s cell all too early, the same as every merciless, sweltering day since he’d arrived. There was no hiding from the sun here, any more than he could hide from danger or death. But he had lived to see another day, no small miracle in the chaotic vortex that was SONA.

If he wasn’t already behind on inventing a path to the impossible, he might have thought it was something worth embracing.

LJ and Sara’s lives depended on him now, just like Lincoln’s had back in Fox River. It all seemed so far away, that first escape from prison-and the life he had beforehand, sure and settled until the time came to sacrifice those luxuries for the sake of the only family he had left.

He didn’t regret it and he never would, not with Lincoln free and safe. He’d do it again if he had to.

Why was Whistler so important? He couldn’t be just a fisherman, or no-one would go to such lengths to get him out of SONA. Michael hated being forced into this situation, not only because he had no schematics or even a spark of inspiration to help him, but also because he had no idea whom he might be freeing-whether Whistler was as innocent as McGrady or as lethal as T-Bag, or belonged to some gray area in between. Michael had already returned one murderer back to society, and he'd lost sleep over it for weeks before T-Bag got locked up in SONA right along with him.

The sun's colors touched the sky now, in the kind of display so beautiful that Michael used to watch it in wonder, once upon a time before everything had changed.

Now the sunrise marked the beginning of another day that brought him ever closer to a deadline he might not make.

Already, the heat was building in Michael’s cell, becoming a weight on his shoulders that made it hard to think.

Somewhere, the sun was rising over LJ and Sara too. Michael hoped to God he'd find a way to break Whistler out of this place before it was too late. Time was running out now, and achieving that desperate goal was the only thing that could keep them both alive.
