"Lincoln, do you realize this will be the longest time we've had together since you went to Fox River?"

"That's true."

"How do you want to spend it?"

"Getting out of Illinois as fast as possible."

"No, seriously."

"I am serious, Michael. First things first."

"Okay, but aside from that… By the way, when was the last time you drove a car?"

"Hey!"

"What. It's not like anyone really needs a car in Chicago, Lincoln-it could be a decade, for all I know."

"Not that long. Maybe four years."

"So do you-"

"Yes, I remember how to drive! You want to pull over for a demonstration?"

"I wasn't asking for that, Lincoln. God, you're touchy."

"Execution date was three days ago."

"Oh."

"Yeah. Can't stop thinking about getting caught and having to go back."

"You know I won't let that happen, Linc."

"I know…"

"Good. What's the last trip you remember taking with Mom and Dad, when you were a kid?"

"Grandma's, before she died. She still lived on the farm-lots of cows."

"And?"

"Smelly."

"I meant what else you did there, Lincoln. Any other kids show up?"

"There was a hayloft. And kittens."

"Veronica used to have a kitten."

"I know, Michael-I had to take you over to visit every day for a month. I think Vee's mom wanted to kill us."

"She wanted to kill everyone. One time she nearly got Billy Thurston in the head with a can of Ajax."

"Billy probably deserved it."

"Yeah. No tragedy there... So Lincoln, are you hungry? Should we stop?"

"No."

"You're not hungry?"

"I swore I wouldn't be hungry 'til halfway across Iowa, Michael."

"What about a fast-food drive-through? I have my hat."

"Not much of a disguise."

"Better than yours, at least."

"That's kind of my point, Michael."

"Fine, all right already. I'll starve."

"Michael…"

"…"

"I'm just worried about getting caught, that's all. You know why-you saved my life, and I'm still not really sure how. It's hard to believe this is real."

"It’s real, Lincoln. It's definitely real."

"I'm afraid if we stop moving, I'm going to wake up in the infirmary with midnight coming and the Chair waiting all over again."

"Lincoln… We're safe now. You're safe."

"But I'm not going to feel it until we're totally off the map-about three countries from here."

"We'll get there, Lincoln we will. I promise."

"Okay."

"-if I don't die from hunger first."

"How hungry would you be if I stuffed you in the trunk? Because that could definitely happen."

"Still touchy, I see."

"You bet. And still bigger."

"How long are you going to keep lording that over me?"

"What do you think, Michael?"

"I don't know."

"Until it stops being true."
