New SPN day finally, and the usual randomness
Looking forward to a new Supernatural, which I hope will be written by one of SPN's usual writers and not one of the S3 newbies. *crosses fingers*
Pushing Daisies: Okay, definitely missed an episode and will be visiting Torrent. For last night, "I have not un-deaded you now or at any other time" is one of the most bizarre comments ever taken out of context. So, did anyone else think that the Wish-a-Wish lady looked a teensy bit like our own anteka? Though I don't think even PWT would have melted that rotten kid's veneer of angry. There, I said it-- chronic illness is a terrible thing, but somehow I don't think that boy was ever anything but dreadful.
Led Zeppelin: Christopher has the broadest musical tastes of anyone in the family-- he's happy with anything but Disco/Pop, including C&W (ack!), rap (I'm good with fusion like Beck, but otherwise No), and 50's stuff (a little goes a long way for me, depending). He likes classical and jazz, he likes the hardcore rock and 60's stuff and grunge and alternative that I like. Recently, he's come to think Led Zeppelin is the be-all-end-all, which I cannot disagree with. ;)
I wasn't that familiar with the broad spectrum of LZ until moving to Sacramento, where a station used to run "The Led Zeppelin Power Hour" every week. That's where I discovered 'Dancing Days' (should annoy the heck out of me, but does not) and 'When The Levee Breaks' (wars with 'Whole Lotta Love' for fave LZ song ever), and all the earlier stuff. Now I've got virtually all the albums on CD. And yes, I've made my peace with Robert Plant's voice-- that was a biggie.
Raves: The LZ version of 'In My Time Of Dying' is INCREDIBLE. When I realized last year which song that was, I went in search of other covers (it's a standard) and... meh. My god, there's practically no melody in any of the other versions-- and the slide-guitar just makes the LZ version. I have similar suspicions about 'When The Levee Breaks' vs. the original-- Must track that one down.
Not-raves: My former brother-in-law, Jeff, was in a band years ago. I asked what they were working on, and he said, 'Black Dog.'
Me: 'Black Dog'? Which one is that? *digs out disc and listens*
Me: Oh. That one's really hard!
Jeff: Yeah. I guess the fact that the original band couldn't play it should have been a warning to us not to try it.
And he's right. The majority of the song goes well, but there are parts of the bridge sections that are just this drift where the drummer and Jimmy Page do not agree on the principal rhythm. You get this effect of everything going along all right in the verse, then mid-bridge there's this "chucka chucka murky mud cats-fighting-in-a-closet *flail* door-bursts-open SYNCH! chucka chucka."
I've listened to it again and again, and I really can't say which of them should be "winning" the argument over how that section goes. Just that, speaking as a musician myself... the rhythm clearly degenerates into mystery, and they should have practiced that at least 20 times more before recording it.
My Office: We work with many East Indians, which is a challenge when the names get really multi-syllabic. Over 4 syllables, and I have trouble getting a fix on the name. However, the person in our office who has Kl posted as his last name? I think that's going a little too far in the other direction. Dude, list your actual name. Make us work for it! Unless that's his Klingon name, but I don't think so.
