Dreams Die Hard
Sam always wanted an ordinary life. A house to grow up in. Friends down the street and neighbors who knew him. He wanted to play Little League and be in school plays. When he met a girl and got married, the cycle would start again.
Those dreams died hard.
His head is filled with nightmares now-- of Jess, of demons and death. Crying children lost forever, nightly horrors to be battled. His enemy is Sleep, and it will find him.
He would kill his Gift to save his sanity, if he could. But he is weak.
The dreams are strong.

Dreams Enough to Survive
Dean has never dreamed of the good life.
He had it once, before he even knew to want it. And then it all vanished in flames and anguish. Since then, he’s been trying to piece together happiness from what little he still has. A family. A brother who needs him. A purpose, and something to be proud of.
He never thinks much past the present, never hopes for more than contentment. Anything beyond that would slip away before he knew how to be the kind of person who could hold onto it.
Here with Sam, together-that’s his dream now.

The darkened church is cold, but evil lives there. It survived the relics, saints and symbols, and is stronger than any faith. He will use the chants and spellbooks, and hope that Latin works better than prayer.
But beside the yawning altar Dean is panicked and alone. Sam is nowhere, the weapons absent, and his Latin was never good. He moves back-- always watching-with the Cross held up before him. When he stumbles Sam is under him- quiet, broken… dead. Dean’s screams cannot be stopped.
Until they wake him, scared and shaking.
Sam sleeps on. Dean waits for morning.
