I decided to watch SeaChange with mum tonight. It had surprise Bill Hunter. Then he recited Banjo Patterson. It was too Australian to handle. Given the timing (Bill having died just a few days ago) I cried. Pathetically.
Another thing that made me want to cry is a recent interview from Harry Angus of the Cat Empire, who takes away the frustration from every time I've been treated like I'm "not a real musician" because I don't want to go pro:
Music is always changing - obviously the fashions change, and the era changes, but also, music is like a big conversation. Everyone is contributing to it, some things we pick up and explore, and reshape and change, and other things are left by the side of the road. This is the side of music that doesn’t have anything to do with the word ‘industry’. It’s a cultural conversation that has been going on for thousands of years. The ‘industry’ is a much more recent thing - it popped up some time last century and people say it’s in crisis already - but I don’t really think it matters. There will always be people who play good music, and people who want to listen to music, and people who bring them together.
The most important thing with music is to enjoy yourself. Seriously. You’re practising one of the oldest trades known to man.
COOL STORY BRO moment for the day: I had been really looking forward to seeing Panic! at the Disco at Soundwave. Then I heard about the stuff Brendon had been saying at shows lately. Like "I want to fuck you all. Even if you don't want it. Especially if you don't want it." And I was extremely fucking mad and deeply disappointed and joking about raping your audience isn't extra fun edgy sex, it's abhorrent and I fucking hate that kind of thing. Then I heard that someone at a meet & greet told Brendon that she was really upset that he said those things and he felt like an asshole and swore he wouldn't do it again and I'm more or less back to loving him. Doesn't totally excuse saying it, but it's nice when people listen.
