God so like I was gonna go finish up my comments on the COMMUNAL RELATIONSHIP MEME but I went and looked and realized I have way more to do than I remembered (NOT TO MENTION THE QUESTIONS MEME WHICH I AM GETTING BACK TO THIS WEEKEND), and I cried. :( And then I went and started it anyway, but uh Teito was first, and Teito . . . ended up getting a really massive essay for a character who's only threaded with Devit like I dunno ten times. Because it's kind of also about Hakuren and how Devit makes friends and liking vs. caring about people for a Noah.
IT IS SO FUCKING LONG THAT I AM POSTING IT HERE INSTEAD. ENJOY, POTATO. I should just do all of 'em this way the way Aviy is doing. Maybe then I will do them faster ;; But t-they mostly won't be this long, because lolol.
Teito occupies a sort of weird, pretty much unprecedented space in Devit's--hierarchy of humans, for lack of a better term. FIRST OFF: Devit does like Teito. Teito is very interesting to him and agreeable to talk to. Even when they're fighting . . . it's hard to explain, but there's fighting that Devit enjoys and fighting he doesn't enjoy. The fighting he doesn't enjoy is like, when someone is picking on him and he can't defend himself and feels cornered and lashes out. That's a good way to get Devit to kill you. The fighting he DOES enjoy--I'm talking verbally here, not physical fighting--is the fighting where it's . . . sort of a debate, the other person may be angry and yelling and disagreeing with him but they're also treating him like a real person whose point of view is worth something, even if it's just "arguing with." That's what got him interested in Hakuren in the first place, kinda! And that's how he feels when he fights with Teito over things like humans or relationships or whatever. They don't agree, but Teito doesn't just go "YOU'RE SICK, YOU MONSTER." He actually engages Devit on the subject, albeit angrily. And Devit likes that.
And when they're not fighting exactly, even though they get along in this sort of awkward way, they do kinda get along, and Devit sort of respects Teito and finds him interesting for a human. I mentioned to Hakuren that Devit thinks Teito is more like DEVIT than he is like Hakuren. He's almost a twisted version of Devit (in Devit's POV, I mean). Because he's a GOOD PERSON and Devit is not, but other than that they have a lot of the same issues. XD They're both spazzy and hypersensitive, they both have abandonment complexes and pervert issues and self-esteem stuff and anger management problems, and they both believe in revenge. When Teito and Hakuren were fighting--Devit was on Teito's side! He knows what it's like to be goaded into a fight and lose sight of any promises you made when you weren't in that situation. In fact he doesn't believe humans are really capable of any better than that (and neither is he). The fact that Hakuren would expect otherwise--it didn't surprise or confuse him, but he looks at that as a sort of "there he goes believing humans are more than what they are again, he should know better than to take this personally." And there was the time he was talking to Teito and Teito said he believed in revenge against "people who deserve it." And that's exactly how Devit feels! He understands this sentiment! THAT'S LIKE THE WHOLE PHILOSOPHY OF THE NOAH. It's just that the Noah also have this--thing in their head making them crazy and telling them that ALL HUMANS are "people who deserve it." XD
So because of that stuff, Devit relates to Teito. And then Teito goes and does something like in the kitten thread where he apologized and admitted that he couldn't really understand what it was like to be a Noah (much less a Noah with a human boyfriend), and that kind of tops Devit. Again in the same way Hakuren tops Devit. Where Devit knows no human can understand, but he expects all humans to judge him anyway, and when a human ADMITS they can't understand or judge, he . . . appreciates that a lot. It's much more than he expects from anyone. What he expects is hatred and lynch mobs, not concession of differences! So--he has more respect for Teito than for most humans. He doesn't expect Teito to like him or approve of him. But he has some respect and that's saying A LOT.
BUT--it's weird, see, because Teito is also Damaged and Devit is observant enough to realize that. Plus he knows a bit about Teito's past. HE KNOWS THE KID AIN'T RIGHT. And Devit is pretty much incapable of friendships that aren't antagonistic. He really . . . HAS to be able to tease someone to interact with them, or else they have to tease him, or both. He just is totally at a loss as to what to do when this isn't possible! But Teito is MESSED UP and doesn't react well to teasing, so Devit's not sure how to be his friend.
And the thing is that normally he wouldn't care. Because Devit doesn't care about most people's feelings or how "badly" they react to teasing. And he doesn't care about Teito. He LIKES Teito but he doesn't care about him. The only people in camp who aren't disposable to him are Hakuren and Mika and sometimes Watanuki (excluding the Noah and OBVIOUSLY MOSTLY Jasdero)--there are plenty of other people he enjoys the company of and might even call friends. But he doesn't care about them. He MIGHT mafia for Teito if Teito needed it, but ONLY in the sense that he would save Teito's life if the situation were drastic (not in the sense of standing up for him or taking a punch for him). But he would only do that because Teito dying would make Hakuren upset and Hakuren being upset is irritating. And he might not even do it then.
(INCIDENTALLY while Camp has provided Devit with humans he likes, it also ironically has made him even more indifferent to their deaths, thanks to the moogles. Outside of camp, it would be more likely that Devit would step in on Teito's behalf.)
So yeah--I mean considering that, it's not like he cares if he teases Teito a little too much and hurts his feelings. He does that to people all the time! So what! It's funny! But the thing is . . . Devit knows that Teito is Hakuren's most important person. He's totally aware that Teito is more important to Hakuren than he is. He is not exactly jealous over this! After all, Hakuren isn't Devit's most important person either--Jasdero is. It'd be ridiculous to expect a human and a Noah, especially half of the Bonds, to love each other the most. So he's not jealous of Teito for how much Hakuren likes him. He'd be jealous if anything romantic went down between them (even accidentally, like mistletoe), but he's not jealous that Teito is Hakuren's BFF.
But it's still a WEIRD SITUATION, because knowing that Teito trumps Devit in terms of importance, it's like . . . "Well if I really fuck with Teito, it's not my side that Hakuren's gonna take, and I'm going to end up couched or dumped or something." Maybe not dumped, because Devit likes Teito and would never consider doing anything to him like what he did to Shuri! But he knows that if he were bantering with Teito and went too far and Teito freaked out--and he knows that HAPPENS because Teito is kinda crazy--he knows that if Teito got into a really pissy mood and it turned into a Thing, Devit would get scolded and maybe shunned and maybe forced to apologize and that's just weird, what the hell. He doesn't worry about this with any other human in camp, really! He IS A BITCH and will tease and taunt and insult anyone he damn well pleases, including friends of his. Because that's how Devit rolls. But if it's Teito, Devit kinda keeps himself in check A LITTLE because he doesn't want to make waves. And then because of THAT, he's not always sure how to interact with Teito, because he's never had to worry about it before. If Teito had a thicker skin, OR if Devit flat-out disliked him, OR if he wasn't as important to Hakuren, Devit would just snipe at him like he does everyone else. But the combination of those three factors makes things a little awkward for him.
What it boils down to is that Devit has a vested interest in getting along with Teito and also WANTS to ANYWAY because he thinks Teito would be an interesting friend, which is a rarity for Devit and humans--but he also has trouble understanding how to get along with someone that you can't deliberately piss off for the fun of it or fool around with in stupid crude teenage boy fashion, because those are the ways in which Devit expresses love. XD SO. While he likes and respects Teito. And enjoys talking to him a lot. There's a part of him that has no idea how to act, because they both are massive social fail, WHEE.
